.on reread, I think this is actually my fave DP book. Wish there was an audiobook!

This is def going on my fave DP list (If I had one).
The usual ingredients of older, wealthy, man's man, and young, jolie laide h who doesn't realize she has an allure all her own. But she's crushed on H for years and watched him with tall stacked blond after tall stacked blond. She of course is NOT a tall stacked blond.
Her slutty mother married his father when she was a teen, and she's crushed on him ever since, but knows he hates her. But his feelings for her are complicated. He doesn't even seem to know what he feels. But usually they clash, and then later he realizes she was right.
Micah leads a somewhat secret life as a mercenary and the man who wants him dead has decided to go after his father and step-sister (Callie). And he does this at the start of the story so right away we are immersed in action filled drama.
Micah, after rescuing her of course, must keep hervery close to keep her safe. During this time they learn more about each other's past. He had made many assumptions about her and it was super eye-opening and shaming when he finds out the truth. He does try to dangle an OW to kinda warn Callie off, but DP doesn't over do it with this story. The OW was there just enough to cause some friction and angst but not frustrate or annoy the reader (imo). Besides, Callie has the spunk to tell the OW what's what and Micah was at a loss for words.
The other thing I enjoyed about this one was the moments of tenderness and the fact that Callie made Micah smile and laugh more than he had in a long time.
The ending was also especially delicious because it's rather extended and goes on after they marry (and not just for the sex times).

Another amazing read by DP - she never disappoints.
And I know, I have said that I rate DP books differently than other books, I compare her regular-yet-amazing-feel ones to the I-am-mindblown ones, but it isn't fair to her. From now on, I am going to rate them according to how much they deserve, and compare them to other authors, not just DP
I have NO TIME to write a proper review, so I'll just say this - h was super sweet, strong, and never did a wrong or irritating thing in her life. Was on her side all the way. Hero was deliciously mean, angry-boner-man, trying his best to be oblivious to his growing feelings for her and so taking it out on her. Classic Diana Palmer.
Loved the story, the beginning, and the ending. Once again I'd like to add, I FREAKING LOVED THE HEROINE. ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS.
And I'm out.

"The Last Mercenary" is the story of Micah and Callie.
Micah and Callie are stepsiblings, who have never gotten along with each other. Micah pushes Callie away when she falls in love with him when she is a teenager, then Micah is caught kissing her mother Anna which breaks tender Callie's heart.
Now Callie lives working for a law firm and taking care of Micahs estranged dad Jack, when she's kidnapped by Micah's enemies and almost assaulted.
How he rescues her and them fighting their feelings is the story.
A typical DP romance with all the classic elements
- a virgin yet strong heroine
- a hero who pushes away his feelings and doesn't want to settle down
- a caring friend who entices the hero's jealousy
- a bitchy ow to throw on the heroine's face
- drama
- loads of kissing and boob rubbing on hairy chests
- virginity mocking
This had a more descriptive love making scene than most other DP, and a heavy (expected) amount of angst too- but overall an enjoyable read.
The whole sedative induced pregnancy was weird enough to make me laugh.

I would have liked this romance way more if not for the ending. I was enjoying myself until the last few chapters, then both story and heroine went down hill fast. Neither were exceptional to begin with, but with the right ending they would have been really ok. Unfortunately everything was swept under the rug in name of the author's usual style 😔. Pity.

My usual Diana Palmer guilty-pleasure full of wanton virgins and mixed-signal step-brothers who are secretly in-lust (or have been for years) with the heroine.
This one, however, threw in a bonafide wanna be other woman who actually let the hero have it. Good for her!!

Oh my God I'm so sad what a bad feeling I honestly haven't felt this way in so long. I hated this book. I can't even believe Callie isn't questioned at being mentally challenged like slow or something. No virginal 22 year old is that clueless. I get DP likes virgins and older men but good God this one was a stretch. Callie was so stupid I wondered how she got up and got dressed by herself. She was just so dense it was comical. Plus Micah basically raped her while she was on a sedative. I just can't even with this book, I can usually tolerate Diana Palmer and her usual clueless virgins because the characters are somewhat likable but Micah was a huge jerk and never really changed he just moved to Jacobsville his personality was the same even if his job and location were different. & Callie was just a clueless airhead with a few sparks of life that I lived for in this book, but they were few and far between. This book was just not for me and I love Diana usually.

Omg I love this book and I take it out and reread at least once a year. This story is powerful and so many great scenes I don't know where to start. Ok so like most if not all of Diana Palmer books the heroine is a virgin and in love with the hero from the start. Callie is strong ( cause she has had to be) and sweet because she chooses to be. She loves her step brother since she was in her teens and that has never changes and Micah the hero can't have her because of his life and history with Callie's mother aka his step mother. They did not have sex together but it was not from lack of trying on Callie's moms part. She was a slut that endangered her daughter and almost has her killed or raped due to her neglect. She is kidnapped and the hero (who lifestyle is the reason for her kidnapping) comes to rescue her in a would say a really emotional scene. Omg they run and she is good in a tight spot follow his lead then discovers that he is her stepbrother. Gasp! I will not say how it ends but the story runs like an action romance movie even with the boat bomb and helicopter ride. All of it I would have liked to see on the big scene except for the short hair I pictured her with long dark hair and blue eyes. Hey that's just me.

In this book we have the last of the mercenaries, the handsome daredevil, Micah Steele going down to an arrow from Cupid's bow.
Although, I found it an enjoyable read, a couple of things in the book rankled.
One was Callie being argumentative over every little thing and the other which left me as outraged as Micah was when after that sensual love-making it turns out Callie thought she was having an erotic dream on account of the sedative Micah had given her and had no clue that they'd had sex until the end of the book.
I liked that the two were able to talk through their past and obliterate the animosity and tension between them enabling them to see better the depth of their feelings for each other, making them possessive of one another and jealous of the OM/OW (like Bojo and Lisse). I loved how Lisse gave Micah a good taste of the bitter medicine that he usually gave others when he uses them for his benefit. As much as I love Micah, he needed something like that, not the way Callie was doing it with her constant arguing and nitpicking. Not that what Lisse did, did much of a harm to Micah, if you read the following scene. It was hilarious how Micah got Callie and himself locked up in the bathroom and was smooching her senseless while poor Lisse screamed her lungs out calling his name as she goes in search of him, then coolly slipping into the dining room and saying wickedly, "I'm in the dining room, Lisse! Where were you? I've been looking everywhere!" LOL Adorable wicked bastard. That's Micah Steele. Proficient in turning around the worst of the 'in hot water' situations.
There was a good mix of romance and action in the book. The Bahamas setting was good. However, even though Eb Scott (hero of Mercenary's woman) appeared at the beginning of the book and Cy Parks (H of The winter soldier) appeared at the end, I badly missed my favorite three daredevils in action together. At last, the terror that was Lopez was brought to an end by Micah. It was amusing how Callie thought Micah was straight-laced, doing his residency as a doctor and wouldn't do anything like his mercenary friends.
Overall, a fun and enjoyable read.

The Last Mercenary is the last book in her mini-series, Soldier of Fortune. And we have Micah Steele's story. His name has been mentioned briefly in some of Ms. Palmer’s previous books. I find his character very intriguing; that's why I was so excited to read his book. And I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed it.
I won't go into so many details because there are many things I want to say about it, but I'm afraid that I might end up telling you about the whole book. Although it's your typical Diana Palmer's books where the hero is a lot older, wiser, more experienced, and fighting his attraction to the heroine for all he's worth and the heroine is younger, naive, sweet, innocent, virgin, and has been in love with the hero for years, I will never get tired of it. Ms. Palmer really knows how to make a three-dimensional character and the complex plotting that her readers will surely enjoy and love.
And by the way, this is my Micah Steele. Yes, you read it right. He's mine!

Una trama bien agarrada de los pelos.
La chica es secuestrada al principio de la historia y el prota la rescata y se la lleva a las Bahamas para protegerla. Ella cuida a su padrastro, padre del prota, y a este le toca mentirle a su papa para que no se preocupe por ella.
Es una historia que es bien blanda y no se sostiene sola, pero en fin, algo entretiene.
El tipo es grosero con ella, pero no vacila para manosearla cuando ella esta bajo los efectos de alguna droga. Ella después recuerda y le entra mucha vergüenza, jaja. El tipo se aprovechó y la desvirgó de una vez para no dejar esa diligencia pendiente.
Ella salió con la supuesta novia de él, Lise, para que la ayudara a comprar ropa. Callie decidió ella misma pagar su ropa y, de paso, trató de parásito a la otra, quien se ofendió.
Luego llegaron los de López a atacarlos en la playa. Me pregunto si tendrá que ver la Lise en eso.
Siento que es una trama bien agarra de los pelos… agradecí cuando la terminé.

Great!!! After a couple of 3-4 star DP books it was a pleasure to read this one and I felt like I was back in DPtopia where the H is an older and very alpha male and the h is the misunderstood virginal heroine. There was suspense and mystery but the focus throughout was the friends/enemies/friends/enemies H/h with many scenes of bickering and sizzling slow-burn action. This was full of the best, well-written DP tropes as well:
-H was unconventionally handsome and catnip to the ladies
-h wasn't "pretty" but all descriptions indicated she was a quiet bombshell who attracted lots of male attention from H's friends
-amorous interlude in past that colored all future interactions
-much bickering to cover attraction of H to h and vice versa
-Hero repeatedly strokes h's lip/cheek/neck/collarbone even though they have decided to be friends only
-lots of second base until the actual act
-accident that helps H realize his love for h
This goes on the re-read shelf

Reread. They were step-siblings that was separated because of a misunderstanding. After H rescued h from the kidnapping, they gradually knew each other and all those misunderstandings happened years ago. Although H tried to place his ex in front of h, h was so strong that she didn't back down from all the insulting. The sedative was hilarious in this novel that made this book different from other DP's novels.

Terkadang perbedaan antara polos dan oneng itu cuma sekian persen.
Anyway, dari semua karya Diana Palmer mungkin ini adalah salah satu karyanya yang kurang sreg bagi saya.
Sebelumnya saya pernah membaca Most Wanted series dan itu bagus semua ceritanya, tapi untuk judul ini saya harus banyak mengucap mantra sabar biar ga dnf.
Adalah Callie, adik tirinya Micah yg terkenal sebagai manusia "cupu" karena ia suka berpakaian ala kadarnya dan hidup secara konservatif. Dia orangnya juga polos dan kadang oneng (sorry to say) 🙏
Polos..... karena ia masih virgin dan selalu memuja Micah dari lubuk hatinya yang paling dalam. Meski ia sering dikasari secara verbal dan diperlakukan cuek bebek oleh Micah tapi ia selalu menoleransi hal tsb.

1. Bab awal terlalu cepat plot-nya.
Berawal dari pertengkaran Micah dan Callie yang bagaikan Tom & Jerry. Micah menemui Callie untuk memperingatkannya akan sebuah "bahaya", tapi ga perlu waktu lama author langsung menyuguhkan part penculikan itu secara spontan.
2. Part penyelamatan >> so predictable.
Ada satu part dimana Callie hampir diperkosa oleh anak buahnya Lopez, lalu tiba-tiba simsalabim Micah muncul menolongnya. Namun sayangnya, part penyelamatan itu kurang sreg bagi saya cuz bukankah rumah seorang Raja Narkoba pasti sangat ketat pengamanannya. Contoh security dimana-mana, rumah yang dilindungi teknologi super canggih jadi bila ada penyusup pasti akan langsung terdeteksi, kaca rumah yang super duper tebal jadi berfungsi juga sebagai kaca anti peluru dan pastinya tidak mudah dipecahkan dengan sekali tendang toh.
3. Gengsi tapi mau.
Callie sikapnya suka berubah-ubah jadi seperti abg labil. Bukankah dimasa dewasanya itu seharusnya labil bukanlah sifatnya lagi?? Karena labil adalah sifat anak bocah menjelang remaja (correct me if I'm wrong)
4. Ending-nya juga..... Yah gitu doang kakak.
Berhubung Callie punya sifat toleransi yang sangat banyak, akhirnya ia nrimo aja alasan Micah kenapa mau menikahinya
Seharusnya ia bisa ngamuk karena Micah melamarnya dengan alasan ituhhh jadi ending pun tidak membosankan.

Diana is a FANTASTIC and classic author! I just adore her books and she creates a special bond between her characters. The writing is solid and she writes in an old world style that I can count on. I read this years ago and this is by far one of the best books and couples she's ever written. These two are written in the stars, they have belonged to one another longer than Micah could admit at one time. Calorie was terrific and sweet and honest. She saw though his crap and didn't disappoint when it came to giving him a piece of her mind.
But unfortunately, she gets kidnapped and he comes to her rescue. And she is forced to admit that he's always had a piece of her heart.
The writing, amazing and cozy, exciting and never dull. For romance and entertainment, Diana delivers. This plot was detailed and never lagged and we get danger on all fronts, even of the heart. She created an atmosphere where you just know they are soulmates, but our H has to be a hard case about it. Micah knew to his bones about her and this poor thing did, too. She tried in vain to hide her feelings and admirably admitted them in a way that just broke my heart. This tough little girl, up against her big, bad step brother and his plans to use her as bait. She couldn't hide her pain at what that suggested and when she voiced her feelings in that very brave way, he was shocked and shamed. He did love her, he did want her. He was the best at his job, but not at his heart nor hers. I hate the playboy aspects of some of Diana's male leads and unfortunately, he was one of those. And we got to have one of his lady friends in the book. The beauty of it all, he only has eyes for his love and will make Callie understand. I do wish we got groveling. Sooo much groveling, but alas, it wasn't done. I still LOVE this book to bits and it kills me that this book STILL isn't available as an ebook!?!?! Oh, sigh. I'm dying over here. Just when my Diana Palmer mood strikes I go looking for this and realize over and over that despite it being 2024, no ebook was created for this book. Please do so, I would be to happy to be able to get this one digital. I don't like to take my physical books out of the house and some are older like this one. I love knowing my babies are safe at home! Loved this and I still consider Micah and Callie two of the best of her couples of all time!

2.5 stars....I really just don’t know where to start. There’s probably going to be spoilers all up in this review, so adjust course now.
What the actual hell!?! I like Diana Palmers books, I’ve read a lot of them. I know her usual tropes and I’m ok with them. But this book, man....this book....
Ok Callie, I liked her spirit, a lot. She reminded me of me. I found myself giving what I would say in a reaction only to read down a few lines to find her words mirroring mine. Even down to the wolf whistles on the porch scene, thinking to myself “I would bow or curtsy!” And then she wonders if she should bow 😂 but man alive is this girl TSTL when it comes to sex! There are lines that make it sound like she doesn’t know what a penis is! I know she’s a virgin, but she’s also 22!!! And has fantasizes a out Micah since she was 16! And then she finds out that he knocked her up while she was drugged and is happy about it!?!
Micah, he’s an anus. I had a hard time liking his character, he was as alpha-hole as they get. I mean he raped her, and then went around town planning their wedding before she even knew he’d slept with her!?? Oh and the Dr.’s reaction of shaking her head and “in all my years” ing, 🤬
I liked Bojo 🤗 (Bow Joe? Bow Hoe?)
Really liked when Lisse gave Micah an earful, even if her character was easy to dislike.

DNF. Disappointed.
The entire plot hinged on finding reasons to talk about the same events from her past over and over to the point of exhaustion. After a while the “feelings” became repetitive and lost their impact for me.
The premise is good! This would have been so much better if it had done a few things:
1: Staggered the revelations about painful events in her past, going from the least to most painful, with the H slowly gaining a deeper understanding and respect for the h as he begins to care for her, and therefore being more hurt by each of the revelations as they get worse and worse.
2: Made the cruelty of the evil OW more subtle, so the H actually doesn’t have grounds to believe anything bad about her (at the moment, the things the OW does are blatant and childish and immediately bother the H internally and are then mentioned over and over in the book.)
3: A “show, not tell” mentality would have really helped. Maybe if events were told in chronological order, or flashbacks, or even just having each event described only once but in an impactful way, and not repeated to the point where I just got numb to each concept…
This potential for a real whammy lost it’s impact for me because it just felt rushed and things were repeated over and over. It felt like the author was trying to wring as much as possible out of each concept. I tried skimming ahead but I couldn’t get past the writing style.
This concept is great for an angsty tear jerker. It might have just been my mood. All the same, I’m going to give this one a pass.

Siempre logro sufrir con los libros de Diana Palmer.
Eso es completamenete seguro.
Soy amante del romanticismo y este libro te transmite eso.
Primero podemos decir que Micah es alguien que no quiere creer en el amor y ver como Callie sufre por cada momento que pasa con el sin poder expresar lo que en verdad siente es una tortura constante. desde el secuestro hasta la vuelta a casa.
A veces solo nos tenemos que dar cuenta que no son los sacrificios que creemos que hacemos son los que estan bien intencionados en pro de los demas o en este caso de una pareja. Es nuestra propia felicidad la que debe tomarse en cuenta desde un principio. Intentarlo, dar ese salto de fe que quizas nos de o no ese final feliz que buscamos.
Eso es completamenete seguro.

Micah and Callie's story is sweet and heartbreaking. Their relationship is complex with a dark history. I got to say, most of Diana's books have a dark history for most of the characters, and this one is right up there.
Despite their dark past, Micah is right there when Callie is kidnapped. He goes to great lengths to rescue her and the result is kind of predictable. I loved the aftermath and the scene with Dr. Lou Coltrain (one of the resident doctors in Jacobsville) is fun and warming.
All in all, it was a good story, and their growth is sweet. For a HEA kind of story with some pitfalls, this is for you!

So let’s start with what was good.
The list of extras, the mercenaries, were kept to a minimum so in this book I could tell who is who.
The plot was definitely interesting and different from cowboy mercenaries.
There was some angst, some kissing, and they had sex before they had to get married. They always have to get married in DP books because of pregnancy!
The bad: hero gives heroine a sedative and when she teases him he can’t hold back any longer and does the deed with this drugged up virgin!!! Really?!?!
This dude is definitely a bad bet for longer term happiness in a marriage. Fictional or not!! And DP says he is one of her favorite characters!

Callie and Micah haven't had a great relationship since her mom. Micah ended up getting kicked out of his house from what her mom did and he thinks Callie is the same way. Callie works and takes care of Micahs father since he got ill. Bad guys captured Callie and Micah goes and rescues her, while in hiding their true feelings come out. The bad guys get what they deserve and the heroes get their happy ending.

I loved the story and journey of Micah and Callie.
I didn't like how the kindle book was with typos. It made it very hard to read and I would have thought it was my kindle except this is the only book that came with major problem with symbols in words. Very disappointing for the price of this kindle book.

DNFed!!It was difficult to connect with the characters especially the female lead.She was not naive but stupid.I didn't like how many times she said she pays her own way.Fine if you want to pay yourself but you don't have to brag about it so much.Also looking down your nose on someone because they don't earn like you is mean and totally judgemental.She spoiled the book for me.
