I watched the TV adaption, so I thought I knew what would await me but the manga itself just made the story seem even more horrific. I feel like I learned something and yet cannot say I'm glad I read it.

The manga is very dark to a degree that life seems meaningless and people irredeemably horrible. It's about characters who get illegal loans (and spiral down into more and more debt) and both sides, the ones who give the loans and the ones who receive them, are shown as not particularly sympathetic. There is very graphic violence, quite graphic sexual content, very heavy topics and a crude art style that makes it all look even worse.

I honestly don't think I could stomach a second volume of this, even though I actually quite like the TV adaptation. The topic is interesting because there aren't so many unsympathetic stories about how people end up in debt, let alone from the perpective of loan sharks. I think what mainly puts me off is probably the art style. It suits the genre but adds to the hopelessness of it all and I'm probably too much of an escapist.

Basic art style is the only bad thing and even then at times the gritty art style is a help especially with the ugly character designs. Wish good reads let you do half stars cos this is the definition of a four and a halfer. As close stylistically to the wire as it gets
