On my first date with my husband we folded origami. I've folded a thousand cranes for a best friend. I like to go to the World Trade Center here in PDX when the Japanese students fold/teach origami designs for the public. For some reason though (I think it is a left- handed thing) I have never been able to follow origami instructions. I have to be shown and then memorize the folds. I have tried COUNTLESS books on origami folding, tried the directions that come with the origami paper, various websites. You get the idea.

And, then- THIS BOOK.
I was able to figure out how to fold the projects from SIMPLY FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Um, Yahtzee!

This is a gorgeous book, showcasing the ancient japanese art of paper folding.

I am addicted to paper, so I couldn't wait to get folding. The easy to follow instructions are perfect for beginners and more advanced origamists.

Included are suggestions for the perfect paper and folding techniques are demonstrated in visual and written formats.

There are many folding projects, choosing a favourite was hard, but the frog, the bunny and especially the kangaroo are adorable.

Sok Song promotes mindfulness and quiet while folding so this is a good activity for those of us who require a hour or two of mental clarity and calmness.

This book comes highly recommended and would make a wonderful gift for both children and adults.

It's a nice collection of patterns, mostly of medium difficulty. I only folded a handful of them, however, as many didn't interest me personally. I appreciated the mix of more traditional and more modern patterns, and as an origami purist, I'm happy to report that none of the patterns use scissors, and most of them are folded from simple squares.

Unfortunately, several of the more interesting patterns need clearer instructions (or better yet, photos) for certain steps. I had to do quite a lot of experimenting to figure some of them out. The lovely modular piece on the cover, for example, has instructions that actually produce a somewhat different variation, and I eventually realized that you have to reverse the direction of the center fold in order to make the design as photographed.

I have looked at quite a few Origami project books, and this one did a very good job of giving pictures of the basic forms, good instructions, and illustrations of finished projects. I really enjoyed the personal quotes from the author about the projects and their names.

The instructions are presented in an easy to follow format, and like Sok Song's personality in the book, they come off as just as charming. Some of my new favourite folding patterns have been found here. This was an all around enjoyable read, especially for being an instructional book.

The origami projects range from classic square paper projects to larger and odd sized paper projects. The patterns themselves vary from animals to boxes to modular to jewellery and fashion. There is something here for everyone's taste and skill. I even enjoyed reading the little tidbits behind the designs and projects.
