The Life and Works of [J. M. W.] Turner by Clarence Jones. Published by The Shooting Star Press, New York, in 1994. A Compilation of Works from the Bridgeman Art Library in London. First American edition, first printing. Glossy pictorial covers with the same design on the dust jacket. 79 pages. Large square book measuring over 8" X 8". Printed in Italy. Fifty paintings by Joseph Mallord William Turner reproduced in full-color on fine-quality glossy paper.
Although this is a pretty lightweight hardback at only 80 pages, every page is in colour, it's well-written and impeccably proofread. The choice, range and scope of Turner's works here is wide and varied, arranged chronologically, well printed and well captioned. It's often difficult to believe that all these paintings are by the same person, let alone all by Turner. As this book is square in shape, and some of the paintings are wide landscapes, there is necessarily some printing across the join which isn't ideal, but otherwise, for what it aims to be, this book is pretty faultless. It's just not very deep or comprehensive, so serious art lovers will want a more substantial tome. 4.5/5
