Tvisvar á ævinni

Rate this book

This is a lovely, touching collection of very readable, enjoyable short stories. Each tale details a series of events within the banality of everyday lives which culminate in a small epiphany. The reader is left pensive or moved at the end of each, which is exactly what I think the art of the short story is about. I also enjoyed the 'mystery' factor to many of these tales along with a few unexpected twists. This collection is quite short but was very thought provoking and left me with a lot of questions about the characters and their lives. I really recommend this to fans of this form of writing.

Sverrison gives an insight into his character's lives with few words. This is a well written collection of short stories, some inevitably more enjoyable than others. My favourites in this collection are The German Teacher's Wife, Exchange of Guilt and The Birthday Present. Sverrison writes particularly well about being a teenager and feeling slightly lost, or just generally being down and out.

As a lifelong fan of the short story form, I appreciated this collection. As with all good short stories, so much is condensed into a brief narrative, offering a window into the characters' lives and the random acts that can influence their futures.
