Sports Illustrated The Covers

Rate this book
For more than half a century Sports Illustrated has put its best face forward every week with one iconic image-the cover. The work of some of the world's greatest photographers and illustrators, there are now nearly 3,000 examples of this magazine art, all curated here in book form for the first time. The greatest moments in sports history are celebrated, as they happened: Ali's defeat of Liston, the Miracle on Ice, Dwight Clark's Catch, Doug Flutie's Hail Mary, Mark Spitz's golds and then Michael Phelps's. Virtually every important athlete in the world-from Roger Bannister in 1955, to Roger Maris in '61, to Roger Staubach in '78 and Roger Federer in 2009-has appeared there, and those are just the Rogers. It's the one arena in which Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali and Jack Nicklaus have all competed together, for the distinction of having the most SI covers. These images are now unique cultural artifacts, and taken together they add up to a delightful and entertaining chronicle of the sporting scene like no other.

Title: Sports Illustrated The Covers
Author: Sports Illustrated
Date Read: May
Genre: Nonfiction
Pages: 207

In this book you will find many interesting facts. Did you know Oklahoma University has a appeared on the most SI (sports illustrated) covers. It also features the cover of every issue. It ends with the issue on May 17, 2010. There are short stories about some of the greatest articles ever written in SI. One talks about Muhammad Ali . They also talk about the rare sports that sometime show up in SI.

I gave this book a 4 out of % because it was OK. I wish it talked about a few more articles. I liked how it gave many cool facts. It was interesting to see how covers changed over time. Also, the most popular sports that appear on covers has changed. I liked how it gave you the date of each edition too. That's why I gave this book a 4 out of 5.

Sports Illustrated: The Covers edited by Greg Kelly (Sports Illustrated 2010) (779) (3762).

This is a beautiful oversized collectible book featuring reprints of the cover illustrations of every issue of Sports Illustrated magazine from its inception in 1954 through the 2010 date of the book’s publication.

This will appeal to those sports fans who (like me) grew up racing to the mailbox each Thursday to grab the weekly issue of Sports Illustrated to devour every single word of every single entry.

I purchased a used HB copy in like-new condition from McKay’s for $0.25 on 6/1/22.

My rating: 7/10, finished 4/6/23 (3762).

Can't wait to dig into (okay, flip through) this read/look. I will have no shame in one day saying I completed a (largely) picture book. That said, what images! And what curses, eh? Ye olde Sports Illustrated cover-star curse, which has most recently afflicted Serena Williams, out with a freak injury since winning Wimbledon and claiming another cover this July.

(Think this is cheap on Amazon right now too -- "right now" as in Friday, October 15, in the year of our Lord 2010.)
