This is the first monolingual language-learning book I've used. I've learned probably a dozen languages through textbooks aimed at English audiences. While at first I hated how it by itself was uninformative -- no wordlists are given to you! you have to look up and write in all the definitions in your language! -- putting in the work made it a richer resource, and of course the process of looking up every word was a learning task in itself. You absolutely need a teacher to work through the text and supplement the book with novel exercises.
2 critiques of substance. This book, as is convention, starts every chapter with a language sample showing off all the grammar and vocab of that chapter. Problem is, they're all basically long essays. I don't understand language textbooks, especially beginning ones, that for models give you only 3-paragraph essays to work off of. 90% of the beginner's interactions are going to be brief repetitive interactions like buying things at stores. Give us models of those. (The "Orange dialogues" somewhat fulfill this need, but are treated as secondary to the main essay.) Get those down first before having us study treatises.
The monolingual principle really hurts the learner in that there is no glossary at the end, or even monolingual index. I see two solutions, neither which are great: (1) you have to remember what chapter/what topic you learned a troubling word, flip to it, and look it up, or (2) make copies of the vocab lists that you translated yourself and compile a topical, non-alphabetic glossary.
Book-as-object note, it's a very nice book, with a nice, robust cover, and heavy, glossy, full-color pages.
Finnish class is completed.. Taking a Finnish linguistics class next.. Hopefully I'm learning here! This book is all in Finnish so it's covered with notes an my translation now
Yleensä en käytä “yksikielisiä" oppimisresursseja, ainakaan ennen kuin tulen ennemän sujuvaksi, mutta mä havaitsin hyödyllisiksi tällä kertaa tehdä niin ja tämä kirja oli mielestäni todella hyvä työntämään minut aloittelijasta keskitasoon.
Suomen mestari 1 on suomen kielen oppikirja. Se sisältää paljon mielenkiintoisia harjoituksia. Se kirja on hyvää aikuisille jotka aloittavat suomen kielen oppimisen sekä koulussa että itse.
Decent book, doesn't contain too much information, and it's not (slef-study) type. It could be the third or fourth book after from start to finnish. And teach yourself Finnish, and suomea suomeksi.
