Moroni Traveler #7
The Hosanna Shout
Moroni Traveler, the Salt Lake City investigator heralded by the New York Times Book Review as "a true rebel hero in the classic private-eye tradition," finds himself working on a very personal case as he and his adoptive father, Martin, look for the three-year-old child who may or may not be Moroni's son. Tracking down a lead, the two men end up in a virtual ghost town in the Oquirrh Mountains. All but deserted, the old mining town of Bingham Canyon is about to be evacuated and razed by the powerful Kennecott Copper Company, which is eager to get at the mineral wealth buried beneath the community. A few families are hanging on, though, including one that may be sheltering the newest Traveler. The father-son duo's efforts are hampered by the slated demolition of their offices in the Chester Building, and even more so by the antics of their fellow tenants, Mad Bill and Charlie Redwine, whose latest shenanigans have evoked the wrath of the Church. With Martin trying to preserve the building and protect Bill and Charlie, Moroni continues the search, until murder rears its ugly head and the investigation moves into a whole new dimension.

March 28, 2019Old series I forgot about. Looked it up at library and we no longer have any of his books in the system. So I won’t read the last one I guess. Maybe try ILL but then again so many other books to read.

I've read 4 books in this series. I love the narrator. He does a great job on the audios. I only wish he could actually pronounce the names correctly. A little research wouldn't be a bad thing when you are narrator. I also love the P.I. angle.
The MC, Moroni, is well drawn. I like how he is true to himself and isn't an ego trip. Out of the 4 books I've read, I liked this story. It was well thought out and it managed to keep an even pace. So 3 stars.

What could go wrong in a small mining town in Utah? Oh, everything. And then some. The past several books, one of the underlying mysteries has been about the recently deceased Claire and if she really had a baby and then if she really did name the baby after Moroni. Now both Moroni and his dad have pulled in all sorts of favors and we finally have an answer to that one - yay! And it's not quite what the guys were expecting.
While that's a touching point to the series, the main mystery of this series revolve around this small mining town that a mining company wants to buy wholesale and dig up - like completely dig up. Obviously, some families don't want to sell but politics are in play... and murder. Wicked murder! Which is great for me as it makes for a delicious plot.
On top of that, the Chester building is in dire straights of being demolished itself. The Chester building is where Moroni and his dad have their PI business and Sandwich Bill and Charlie hang out. But then a minor miracle is rediscovered and that changes everything.
It was an awesome ride with a warm fuzzy at the ending. 5/5 stars.
The Narration: Jeffrey Kafer gives us another great performance. I love his voice for Moroni, especially in his more vulnerable moments (like caring for kids). The ladies sound like ladies and all the characters have their own voice. The pacing was perfect. On the tech side, the volume does go up and down a little hear and there like Kafer rerecorded a section here and there. However, that didn't detract from the enjoyment of the audiobook. 4.75/5 stars.

OK, so I have a crime/mystery fiction fetish and just on principle a series about a Jack Mormon detective set in SLC just makes me giggle... Basically its very well written social observation of this strange place and strange people...

Interesting take on what sometimes goes on in the LDS church according to the author. I would not be interested in any more books written by him or her.
