It was interesting to see the kids realize that these tales all follow a pattern, with repeating events.

This is a folktale. This novel tells the story of a spider named Anansi who was very lazy and very clever. In this story a witch puts a spell on the number 7, if anyone said the number seven they would disappear. Because Anansi was lazy he used that to his advantage to steal the food of the villagers and make them disappear.
This a west african folktale that teaches children not to steal from people and not to take advantage of someones kindness (when the villagers helped Anansi they disappeared because they accidentally said 7) because it will come back to hurt you.

Alice's first Anansi story! Another pick from the library in which Anansi, the Rastafarian spider creature in the story, tricks each of the other animals into saying the magic word, "Seven," causing them to shoot in the air, flip around, and fall down. It works until the Guinea Fowl beats him at his own game.

This was a very influential book for me when I was younger. I remember my teacher reading this book very animated like. I loved her characteristic voice which engaged us all in the story. The brightly colored illustrations helped to keep our attention as well as introduce new concepts to us.
