My grandad's Christmas gifts are not so gentle nudges towards a revolutionary streak that is (in his eyes) sadly lacking. My grandma just gives the old books she no longer wants. I once asked for her copy of Orientalism, which was just not going to happen.
Alas. Still, if someone gives me a book, I do make an effort to read it. Overall, it's a good book and I have a better idea of Durkheim's ideas. But I can see why she didn't want the book anymore.
As a primer, it does a fantastic job at contextualising Durkheim's arguments by focusing in on the arguments he made by analysing his books sequentially. The approach is good because it allows readers to trace the intellectual development of his ideas in different domains, whilst understanding where he amended or updated certain positions. I took loads of notes and used this text with students and would encourage other teachers to do the same
