Gregor Mendel: Genetics Pioneer: Life Science

Gregor Johann Mendel is known as the father of modern genetics. He used cross-breeding to develop different kinds of peas. This allowed him to make predictions about the outcomes. These are now called Mendels Laws of Heredity. They explain how traits are passed from generation to generation. Mendel also discovered dominant and recessive genes.

The book, Gregor Mendel: genetics Pioneer is written by the outstanding author, Lynn Van Gorp. This book is a biography explaining Mendel’s life. Gregor Johann Mendel was a Austrian genetics pioneer born July 20, 1822 in Heinzendorf, Austrian Empire which is now Hynice, Czech Republic. Mendel’s parents were both poor farmers but farmed on land that didn’t belong to them. As a young man, Mendel worked as a gardener, but he decided that he wanted to have a better life. Although his parents were very poor, they had enough money to pay for his education. He attended the Philosophical Institute in Olomouc. At the age of 21, Mendel became a monk in the Abbey of St. Thomas and received the name Gregor. During the days, he taught Latin, Greek, and Math, but when he took the test to become an official teacher, he didn’t pass it. But his teachers recognized what an alert student he was and made it possible for him to go the University of Vienna. Mendel never got a diploma but he had been inspired to study plants. It changed the course of his life. As at that time Peas were a common vegetable, Mendel started experimenting in his garden with 34 varieties of peas and ended up with at least 28,000 plants all of which he studied and tested. Mendel crossbred and mixed thousands of varieties of plants and through his research he was able to explain how traits passed from one generation of pea plants to the next. But before Mendel, scientists believed in the theory of blending. They thought offspring had a mixture of traits from their parents. In conclusion, Mendel is an Austrian genetics pioneer who discovered modern genetics and is known as the father of genetics.

Gregor Mendel never had the chance to know how important his findings were. During his time, scientist barely took notice or understood the importance of his discoveries. But 16 years after his death, scientists rediscovered his findings and started to study his work and realized how important his conclusions were. He discovered and showed the world important information about how characteristics are passed from generation to generation. He discovered the modern genetics and his findings are now called Mendel’s laws of heredity. Gregor Mendel became famous because of his research in the world of genetics. If there would be a list of five facts that a person should know about Gregor Johann Mendel, this would be the list: Mendel is known as the father of genetics because he discovered modern genetics; He experimented with pea plants in order to be able to find the rule of genetics, Even though Mendel started off in a very poor family, he was the one to discover the real laws of genetics; Mendel started off with 28 types of pea plants and ended up with at least 28,000 plants of which he all studied and tested; And even though Mendel never had a real laboratory, but his garden, he was able to make huge findings which would change the science of genetics. The most important lesson from Gregor Mendel’s life is to never give up. Mendel started out as a child of a very poor family. He had some education but at the age of 21 he became a monk. In the beginning Mendel taught but never passed his test to officially be able to teach. But he still didn’t give up and started studying plants in his garden. He continued with this and never gave up. Through all his research he was able to set the path to modern genetics. This shows that even with the worst conditions, one should never give up and keep trying hard.

The book Gregor Mendel: Genetics Pioneer is a very interesting and captivating book. I would recommend this book because it teaches a lot of valuable information in an easy to understand and well structured way about the foundation for the modern genetics. Additionally, the book easily explains how the finding of Mendel and how they affected today’s view about genetics. Lastly, one can learn a life lesson from Gregor Mendel’s life through reading this book: NEVER GIVE UP, even if you are in a really bad state, NEVER GIVE UP. This book is mainly for middle and elementary school students because it helps them understand Gregor Mendel’s life better. Additionally I recommend this book to all students that are interested in science. As one can see, Gregor Mendel: Genetics Pioneer is considered a very interesting book by explaining the reader about the life of the Father of genetics.
