The Third Way

Expected 10 Dec 29"The Third Way" enjoyed a dramatic success when it first appeared in the late 1990s. The book helped to provide inspiration for left-of-centre parties in a variety of different countries around the world, and many incorporated elements from it into their political programmes. Its influence in Britain was particularly strong and the author worked closely with successive Blair governments in the formulation of social and economic policy. But all governments have their own agendas, and they interpreted and adapted the ideas of The Third Way for their own purposes. In some circles the third way came to be seen as an endorsement of a market-driven approach to politics.
The new edition of this classic text includes an extended Preface in which Giddens clarifies the original intent of The Third Way and analyses some of the major developments in political and economic life in the decade since the book first appeared. 'The third way' was always a label for the renewal of social democracy: the point was to update social democracy in the face of far-reaching social and economic change, especially transformations brought about by the intensifying of globalization. Giddens argued that we need to go beyond the two main traditions which dominated post-War thinking in the industrial countries - the 'Old Left', on the one hand, and market fundamentalism, on the other. The Preface assesses the impact of New Labour and of parallel innovations in other countries, analyses the implications of the financial crisis for the further development of social democratic thought and considers how far the arguments of The Third Way retain their relevance today. 'What's left?' - the question is as pressing today, and as difficult to answer, as it was a decade or more ago.

Three notable stages can be identified in his academic life. January 16, 2019I had assumed from the title that Giddens book might be targeted at the political programmes of centre left European political parties, but in practise he seemed to be re-imagining a consensus of political values for the government of Britain to replace the idea of the welfare state which was broadly supported by political parties from 1945 through to the late 70s or early 80s. that would be universal across the political spectrum rather than restricted to any one political party.
The arguments for change included the need to address environmental issues, a desire to make the country more democratic and inclusive, globalisation, and implicitly that there is no alternative to the currently preveiling flavour of capitalism. The essence of his view is that a neo-liberal conception of the market is an unchallengeable reality, but that it can be given a human face, it can be improved upon, or its edges smoothed, principally through promoting equality as inclusiveness which in practise seems to mean that everybody ought to be free to be a wage slave irrespective of age or condition or creed. Interestingly this leads him to condemn the idea of meritocracy as something in practise leading to a self replicating elite.
His view of society is profound an economic one - the meaning and purpose of life implicitly is that you live to work. The role of the state is to maximise equal access to the opportunity to work primarily through education, abandoning the idea of the role of the state being to insure that there was work available if necessary through government purchase of companies or subsidies, the economy should though be nursed along through state infrastructure investment. The state becomes a contractual authority in this conception, for example an unemployed person enters into a contract to sincerely search for work in order to receive state benefits rather than receiving them as a right as a citizen, equally disorderly conduct particularly by young people is to be addressed by obliging them in contracts to be loyal and quiet , care for the elderly can be addressed in his view by legally obliging their children to support them, blithely ignoring the realities of the current flavour of capitalism which make it difficult for people to do so in the first place.
None of this comes as a great surprise to those who remember the New Labour era which I felt was despite its most determined efforts at times, was nonetheless slightly more left wing than what Giddens describes.
His criticism of the welfare state I found particularly curious, he did not view it as unaffordable or even particularly expensive though he notes the in creasing burden of old age pensions, the main issues seem to be the origins of the welfare state, for example the Bismarckian insurance system in Imperial Germany were design to prevent socialism and that worker's rights coming from EU legislation are influenced by Catholic social teaching, as though this is the first step to the introduction of the rosary and road side shrines. As an irreligious person I find this anti-catholicism one of the less pleasant historic relics in British political life and it suggests that Giddens vision is far less inclusive and democratic than he thinks. I believe he was correct on both counts, but I don't see how that leads one to conclude that the welfare state needs to be replaced, and that for me was part of the puzzle of this book, he has a strong vision, but it is strangely disembodied, he holds a position but without much reference to history or data.
His vision is profoundly internationalist, but also too reasonable in some respects for his time - he assumes that the reaction to the financial crises of the mid 1990s would be greater regulation, not the continued deregulation that was to occur.
I had assumed that his book predated the first Blair victory in 1997, but it comes after, perhaps as an attempt to provide some kind of intellectual framework for New Labour politicians. That Giddens sees 'third way' politics as emerging particularly with the Clintons in the USA, probably sends more of a danger signal now than it did at the time of publication.

Analysis shows the receding effect of governments , the increasing power of challenger movements, the reducing gap between right wing parties and left wing parties , and the need to face the problems of Globalization , and that emerged from the new technology application :D

Interesting overview. Think it has been unfairly derided after the Blair years, but it seems like many of Giddens suggestions or motivations were ignored. It's still a relevent book despite all that's changed in the years it's been published.

The Third Way is a politically centrist attempt to balance some aspects of economic Neoliberalism (the New Right) with the social policies of classical Social Democracy (the Old Left). The New Right has ignored the fact that markets are in reality made up of people and therefore are social (i.e., they cannot be viewed through a purely individualist lens). The Old Left has pretended that markets are bad, full stop, and central planning is still a viable method. Since both of these approaches have imploded memorably on a global scale in recent times, it is timely to consider some of his ideas. The Third Way is pragmatic rather than highly ideological. It focuses on globalization and the information society, rather than nation-states and industrial society. Like the right, it focuses on market economies, but like the left, it propses full employment. It speaks to a balance between social rights and responsibilities. Unlike purely individualist neoliberalism it speaks to community, which is also unlike social democracy which still speaks to class politics. Give it a try and see what you think. I believe there are some very good ideas here.

أولاً الثلاث نجوم سببهم إني كنت منتظر من الكتاب أكثر مما وجدت, فخاب ظني وأنا الآن حزين.
الكتاب يتحدث عن الطريق الثالث وتجديد الديمقراطية الاجتماعية استناداً إلى تجارب دول أوروبية والولايات المتحدة, المشكلة بالنسبة للقارئ العربي أو المصري خصوصاً إننا لم نخوض تلك التجارب كدولة, فلا الدولة لديها سياسات واضحة أو ديمقراطية صحيحة أو نظام يمكن دراسته وبحث سبل تجديده وإصلاحة, الوضع بائس هنا.
الاستفادة الأهم من وجهة نظري هي كيفية التعامل مع المشكلات التي واجهتها دول أوروبا وسبل حلها عند التعرض ليها في حالة ظهور ملامح وخطط للدولة عندنا.
طرح جيد للمشكلات التي تواجه الطريق الثالث وعرض رؤيته لها وطرح حلول لبعضها وترك البعض الآخر بعد تعريف المشكلة فقط, معظمها لا تهمنا كدولة نامية وعالم ثالث.
بشكل عام اشطه يعني حلو.

الطريق الثالث هو رؤية سياسية/ اقتصادية تقع بين اليمين واليسار
لا تؤمن بالسوق الحر ولا بملكية الدولة لوسائل الانتاج بشكل كامل كما في النظام الاشتراكي او حتى المختلط ولكن تؤمن بنظام السوق مع تدخل الدولة بشكل رقابي وتنظيمي/تشريعي لمنع الاحتكار والسعي من خلال التقدم الاقتصادي الى تنمية المجتمع ككل وزيادة الحقوق الاجتماعية الممنوحة للافراد غير القادرين على الإعالة

الكتاب تمام غير موجه لينا ,احنا لا وصلنا لمرحلة (دولة رفاهية ,خضر,ديمقراطية ....الخ) كل المصطلحات دى مش عايشنها ,لا يوجد الا استبداد وديكتاتورية الراى الواحد ,والسلطة الابوية .
كل ما يناقشة الكتاب هى تعتبر اضافة لشخصك لتسايرالمحيط بك مع العلم انى الكتاب نزل ف�� 98 ,فما بالك حاليا الناس دى وصلت فين فى النقاشات وفى فلسفتها للوجود ,ودعم المواطن والديمقراطية الاجتماعية ,والتكافل الاجتماعى ؟؟

Anthony'ego Giddensa można uznać za "Fukuyamę socjaldemokracji". Z jego wydanej w 1999 roku pracy wyraźnie bije przekonanie o końcu historii. Przykładem jest choćby naiwna wiara, że nie będzie już wojen, bo... na na świecie coraz częściej graniczą ze sobą demokratyczne państwa. Poza tym widoczna jest typowo deterministyczna postawa opierająca się na przekonaniu, iż neoliberalizm będzie już tylko zwyciężał, rzeczywiście dąży on do rozwoju i zasadniczo thatcherystowskie "there is no alternative", no może z pewnymi osłonami socjalnymi.
Widać na tych przykładach wyraźnie, że znany brytyjski socjolog żywił wręcz dziecinne nadzieje, nawet jeśli ponad ćwierć wieku temu rzeczywiście można było mówić o triumfie liberalnej demokracji. Od tego czasu niemal wszystkie żywione przez niego przekonania legły w gruzach. Rynek ani nie "wyregulował" stosunków społecznych, ani nie wyciągnął milionów ludzi z nędzy, ani też przedsiębiorstwa same z siebie nie zaczęły NAPRAWDĘ wprowadzać zasady tak zwanej "społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu". Nie ma także mowy o "kosmopolitycznym nacjonalizmie", bo interesy poszczególnych narodów coraz wyraźniej triumfują nad wszelkimi ponadnarodowymi strukturami. Jesteśmy więc jeszcze dalej niż wtedy od utworzenia postulowanego przez autora "rządu światowego".
Są jednak też pewne ciekawe wątki. Giddens na przykład krytykuje konserwatystów za rozpowszechnianie nieprawdziwego przekonania, jakoby mężczyźni byli niezdolni do moralnych zachowań i odpowiedzialności wobec rodziny - obecnie problem ten dotyczy, nawet jeszcze bardziej niż wówczas, europejskich kobiet. Socjolog trafnie też zauważa, że "staroświecka" lewica nie bardzo wie, co zrobić w warunkach wzbogacenia się społeczeństwa i jego ambicji wykraczających poza płacę minimalną i zasiłki socjalne. Wydaje się, że do dzisiaj ten problem nie został rozwiązany, a patrząc na wyniki lewicy w Europie, postawienie na wojny kulturowe przyniosło jej sukces na bardzo krótką metę.
Reasumując: "Trzecia Droga. Odnowa socjaldemokracji" jest przede wszystkim swego rodzaju świadectwem epoki, a nade wszystko naiwności "odnowionej socjaldemokracji", która poddając się liberałom przestała się tak naprawdę liczyć, zaś jej działacze na przykład we Francji nie mieli problemu, aby w jeden dzień zwinąć czerwone sztandary i stworzyć liberalny obóz Emmanuela Macrona. Oczywiście Francja to inny kraj, ale w Wielkiej Brytanii Partia Pracy pod wodzą Keira Starmera również jako swój priorytet traktuje przypodobanie się oczekiwaniom biznesu.

Giddens na przykład krytykuje konserwatystów za rozpowszechnianie nieprawdziwego przekonania, jakoby mężczyźni byli niezdolni do moralnych zachowań i odpowiedzialności wobec rodziny - obecnie problem ten dotyczy, nawet jeszcze bardziej niż wówczas, europejskich kobiet. Socjolog trafnie też zauważa, że "staroświecka" lewica nie bardzo wie, co zrobić w warunkach wzbogacenia się społeczeństwa i jego ambicji wykraczających poza płacę minimalną i zasiłki socjalne. Wydaje się, że do dzisiaj ten problem nie został rozwiązany, a patrząc na wyniki lewicy w Europie, postawienie na wojny kulturowe przyniosło jej sukces na bardzo krótką metę.
Reasumując: "Trzecia Droga. Odnowa socjaldemokracji" jest przede wszystkim swego rodzaju świadectwem epoki, a nade wszystko naiwności "odnowionej socjaldemokracji", która poddając się liberałom przestała się tak naprawdę liczyć, zaś jej działacze na przykład we Francji nie mieli problemu, aby w jeden dzień zwinąć czerwone sztandary i stworzyć liberalny obóz Emmanuela Macrona. Oczywiście Francja to inny kraj, ale w Wielkiej Brytanii Partia Pracy pod wodzą Keira Starmera również jako swój priorytet traktuje przypodobanie się oczekiwaniom biznesu.

Anthony Giddens, en este panfleto, hace un llamado a reorganizar la socialdemocracia.
Después de casi treinta años de este giro vemos que gran parte del programa socialdemócrata se ha consolidado, apareciendo nuevos problemas en el intermedio: familias democráticas, pérdida de la tradición y su sustitución por vínculos orgánicos, el cosmopolitismo, la migración multicultural, etc.
Con este texto queda claro cómo los socialdemócratas solamente buscan acelerar la disolución de las sociedades tradicionales mientras atenúan los efectos perniciosos de la modernidad. Lo lamentable del libro de Giddens no son las ideas ahí expuestas sino que se hubieran hecho realidad en gran parte de lo que se denomina "Occidente". No sorprende la disolución de los países europeos después de leer este texto.
Ahora bien, el libro tiene buena prosa. Es conciso, sin embargo, a ratos considero que revuelve sus ideas. La exposición, empero, resulta clara, casi diáfana. Para Giddens queda claro que el desafío neoliberal sacudió los cimientos de la socialdemocracia primera; él, en su época propuso retomar lo mejor de ambos legados y pretendió rebatir el provincialismo de la Derecha inglesa. Es mejor atacando a sus enemigos que al proponer alternativas. Todo queda en meros deseos: que la socialdemocracia sea abierta a la globalización pero no aniquile a la nación, etc. A ratos el texto cae en un tono lastimero, impropio de un análisis claro de la crisis por la que atravesó la socialdemocracia hace décadas.
De haber leído esta obra antes posiblemente hubiera admirado la contudencia de los argumentos o la diáfana exposición, pero ahora resulta algo superada. No obstante, como "discurso" está bien escrito. Y eso se debe reconoder.

Como su título indica, este libro es sobre la socialdemocracia, la llamada "tercera vía" entre el socialismo y el capitalismo que marcaron el siglo XX. Pero no trata de cualquier versión de la socialdemocracia, sino de una forma renovada, adaptada a las necesidades del mundo contemporáneo.
Quizá el mejor aspecto del libro es que esclarecedor en cuanto a que ofrece un panorama muy ilustrativo del contexto político a finales de siglo, cuando tras la caída del bloque socialista el pensamiento político de izquierdas se encontraba desorientado (se encuentra, si me preguntan).
Ante el avance del neoliberalismo, con las nefastas consecuencias que acarrea, y reconociendo que no es posible el simplemente volver a modelos anteriores, Giddens perfila una socialdemocracia que incluya en su programa la gobalización, la libertad individual, la protección del medio ambiente, la igualdad, el pluralismo cultural y la democracia cosmopolita.
Sobre todo, es útil para entender realmente de qué se trata esta postura, pues muchos derechistas la ven no más como "comunismo disfrazado" y para muchos izquierdistas no es más que "neoliberalismo light".
Aunque es un libro interesante y, como dije, ilumina bastantes puntos importantes, a casi 20 años de su publicación dudo de su relevancia en el futuro. Además, la "tercera vía" bien puede verse como un práctico, viable y sensato término medio, pero ese pequeño anarquista que tengo en algún lado dentro de mí me dice "nope, that's not enough".

January 8, 2023Anthony Giddens is a great writer, but there is a glaring dearth of talk on human nature and genetics across his work, which is really the central pillar we need to understand ourselves and our communities.
When it comes to change in our communities, no matter what our ideals are, the central problem is that we aren't rational actors, and it's only a very best case scenario that we have enough information to make informed decisions. And those decisions are also being made in an environment where there are 20 different opinions among every 100 people.
The strength of democracy isn't in our political ideals, it comes from limiting power-hungry people from exploiting our communities for their own gain. No matter what we do we'll never be able to fully control our future, but we can strengthen our democratic institutions to stop them from declining, and to keep them stable across time. To me that's about the closest you're going to get to a 'third way'.

It is a good read but obviously it is very dated what with Brexit Trumpism and its aftermath and the COVID pandemic.Also we have the emergence of strong populist leaders in Russia China Brazil Turkey Philippines .Now that Trump is no longer president if the USA going to be influenced by his legacy. Hopefully Biden will be strong and savvy against it but no one can be absolutely sure
I like a lot of his ideas I am an admirer of New Labour Politics it is sad that the only legacy of Tony Blair is the Iraq war because he did many good things snd no one should be saying that the invasion of Iraq would not have happened as the US would have gone ahead come what may but Blair at the time gave it legitimacy.

I decided to read ‘The Third Way’ for a couple of reasons, my daughter and I are building up our political history collection at home, it should also work as a reference for when she goes to university.
Also I understand that the author was a favourite of Tony Blair.
I enjoyed the positioning of the argument, but for me, it felt like a watered down version of neoliberalism, or pandering to it.
Some of the text felt a little outdated now (not the authors fault, rather developments of post Brexit and trump version 2.0).

Thought provoking and insightful
Worth the read to put new and old ideas in perspective. Renewed doesn’t mean it has failed, it’s like reading a poem years later, with more experience, and a different perspective

Después de leer "La tercera vía" me quedé con ganas de aventarme su segunda parte, que de hecho resultó ser más interesante porque aquí Giddens se ve obligado a responder a las críticas que se ha hecho de su proyecto político socialdemócrata, y cuando alguien tiene que defender sus ideas, hasta esa misma persona las entiende con más claridad.
Pues eso, Giddens se dedica a clarificar lo que él entiende por la "tercera vía", es decir, una nueva manera de entender la socialdemocracia, que no es ni neoliberalismo ni socialismo al estilo clásico del siglo XX, pero tampoco es meramente una combinación de ambos ni un punto intermedio, sino un programa político en sí mismo.
Lo más valioso del libro, me parece, es que traza un panorama del mundo actual, uno que ha cambiado radicalmente en cuanto a ciencia, tecnología, sociedad y economía y para el cual ni el neoliberalismo ni la vieja izquierda tienen respuestas coherentes. Probablemente este libro tampoco las tenga, pero por lo menos muestra que es necesario empezar a pensar de acuerdo al mundo actual, y no a concepciones ideológicas decimonónicas.
La globalización, la economía de conocimiento, la creciente desigualdad y la crisis medioambiental son algunos de los temas que Giddens aborda y de los que expone la urgencia de añadirlos a la agenda política.
Interesante y esclarecedor, se siente un poco envejecido tras el cambiazo que significó el 9/11 y, como su antecesor, dudo que tenga mucha relevancia con el paso de las décadas. Un libro de su momento, sin duda, pero ¿duradero? No lo creo.

I'm always thinking why there is just Right and Lift? Why does the Right link the capitalism with the conservatism? Why does the Lift link the mixed economy and social concern with the liberty and moral freedom. I think there should be third way and fourth way and fifth and seventh...
Overall, the book has shown a good sense of a powerful ground for a new way of the social democracy. I personally think that this way makes much more sense than the traditional left and right.

Interesting work, with a clear echo in today's politics. All around fresh ideas 10 years ago, which are relatively well-known at the moment. In the end, I found many parts rather vague. The author missed the opportunity to propose actual measures for the 'crisis' of social-democratism. He did state this was not his goal, but in my opinion it's rather easy to analyze a certain issue, while remaining in a grey area when it concerns actual solutions.

O livro trata da social-democracia como uma espécie de centro-esquerda, uma alternativa ao mundo bipolarizado entre capitalismo e socialismo. Apesar de trazer tendências que não se cumpriram e de pontos contestáveis, muitas de suas ideias são bastante atuais e se encaixam no contexto em que vivemos hoje. Vale a pena ler e reler.
