The story closely revolves around a boy who wants to be the best at something, "anything." He often gets depressed or when he's not doing well, will simply stop and go home. In the end, his friend points out that he's the best at thinking. Definitely "preachy" and I would have liked it better if it had just been a story without the agenda.

Reading Level: 1st - 2nd grades

Cleanliness: when Jeff can't do something as well as others or be "the best" he gets sad and often quits.

This book was a great one to use for a measurement lesson. I read this book to my first graders, and they were really engaged. It is a level reader, however, I used it as a lesson engager. As I read the book, students kept track of all the different measurement tools used to determine the height, width, and size of the snowmen. After we determined the different measuring tools, students used units, tiles, unifix cubes as different measuring tools to measure school supplies found in their caddy. We compared and contrasted different measurement tools and eased into inches and centimeters. Students loved this activity!
