As a huge foundry hobbyist, I've always been a fan of Mr. Ammen's books. Most of them were published as TAB paperbacks in the 70's and many are out of print. I've got them all. As a recently published new book, I thought this one would have some new material and the cover was certainly intriguing as it shows a gravity permanent mold being poured. There is almost no mention of this process in the book. There is however, much of the same information and pictures as in his other books such as "The Metalcasters Bible" or "Casting aluminum." To me, this book was a disappointment and I rated it 3 out of 5 stars. If it were my first book by him, I would have rated it higher as it does have very good information in it. keep in mind however, the author spent his life working various foundries decades ago, although the process is the same, some of the materials mentioned have changed. One example is plaster is being replaced by silicone molds for making match plates patterns. It is a very good book, just pass it up if you've got a few of his others.
