It's August of 1970, and the friends of 21-year-old Oliver Duncan are having a blast at his bachelor party. Except Ned Surwicki. He isn't an Ivy Leaguer. He doesn't appreciate female strippers. And although he's been Oliver's best friend since they were 14, Ned isn't much inclined to celebrate his pal's impending marriage. This was a fabulous friends turned lovers m/m romance. It was sexy, sweetly sentimental and heart wrenching. I enjoyed this story so much and now have to find everything else this author has written.

It gave me the tingles!
This is my third K.Z. Snow book and each one I read is better than the last. This one starts off in 1970 at the bachelor party of Oliver Duncan. Oliver's best friend, Ned Surwicki, is there, watching some random girl shake her assets in his best friends face; the best friend he has been in love with since he was 14 years old. Now, at 20, he is no less in love with Oliver, than he was when they met as high school freshman. Oliver, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have an attraction to Ned. Well, why would Ned think so, being that it's Oliver's bachelor party and he is to wed a woman in a few days. When the night before that fateful day comes though, Oliver is less ready to take the plunge than anyone would have thought. When his cold feet and underlying concern that he may be less than straight get the better of him, he calls his best friend and arranges for the two of them to take a 5 day journey west to Seattle by train.
The train ride west transpires as you might assume, with the two young men recognizing that they're more than merely best friends to one another, but this is 1970 and homosexuality was even less accepted then than it is now. Upon the conclusion of their five day getaway, they return to their families, their hometown and their normal lives. They love one another deeply, but as so sadly happens sometimes, life simply gets in the way. One thing leads to another and it's many years before the two meet up again, this time as successful men in their thirties and the love that blossomed 15 years prior takes root again, or maybe not so much takes root, but flourishes back with a vengeance.
This story left me with a silly grin plastered to my face. It's a very what is meant to be will be type of tale and I loved it.

Electric Melty Tingles is beautiful. A dazzling work of art that spoke right to my heart with words, emotions, and descriptions that left me in awe. K.Z. Snow’s gorgeous prose tickled all of my senses! Just listen…
”Perfectly interlocked, we said nothing. The train hypnotically chattered and rocked down the tracks. Faintly, at the base of my breastbone, I felt the muffled beating of Oliver’s heart. Mine met it, and the train’s movement met both, and for a brief eternity, the entire world seemed synchronized with our togetherness.”
Ned and Oliver’s story swept right into my head and heart with power, charm, and beauty. A story that shows how beautiful love can be. How a heart can breathe easy, beat faster, and feel so complete and full in love. But these pages also reveal how love can slip away if we let it. The thought of a lost love gives me the chills. Terrifies me to the core, but it happens in life. Time, distance, miscommunication, and so much more can add up. I want to yell it from the rooftops--hold tight to your love! Don’t let it get away!
A beautiful love story sure to warm, touch, and melt your heart!

I have to admit, when I first learned from K.Z. about the summary and the length of the story, I'm a bit disappointed. Why? Because I thought this would be a perfect ground for a full-length novel. Love story that spans 40 years? How is that enough in a novella? I would love to read their journey of love in full-length novel like I read Jeffrey Eugenides's "Middlesex".
BUT, after I actually read the story, well, I have to admit that novella can be as fulfilling as full length novel. I look at my parents' marriage, and they have been together for 30+ years, and I'm sure that not all of those days are 'worth telling'. Sometimes, they're mundanes. But there are also monumental events that they remember the most within that 30 years, and I guess, this is what the story like in the end.
Wait, I'm rambling ... okay, let's see. About 3/4 part of the story is taken place in 1970. When 20-year-old Ned Surwicki -- who have known that he is gay since he was in seventh grade -- helps his best friend, 21-yead-old Oliver Duncan, to overcome his fear of getting married by well, getting away from it all. They catch a bus to Chicago, and then ride a Vista Dome sleeper to Seattle. The main focus of the story is what happens in that 5-days trip, as the two friends come to discover their love to one another. Then about 1/4 of the story is when they meet again in 1985 Summerfest, and a glimpse of what happens now, in the year 2010. The story is written in first person point of view, and the narrator is Ned.
One of the BEST things about K.Z's story is always the beautiful words. She writes like a poet
"The air was still fresh, although it held a promise of heat and humidity, and it buoyed smells that were rich and varied and distinctly of this city: the fecund odor of the lake, the thick pungency of bus exhaust, the dusty breath of old brick and the crusty breath of fresh bakery."
Whenever I read her stories, I feel like I'm being lullaby-ed by the words. However, more than that, this story is very thoughtful: about being true to yourself, about love and acceptance, about that electric melty tingles that you get when you're with the one you love.
There is a scene when Ned coming out to his father, that I think will ring true for some of the gay kids out there. I love K.Z. does not quickly blame the parents, instead she writes ... I understood their discomfiture. It saddened me, but I was grateful their love remained unconditional. Mom and Pop belonged to a different generation. If my generation had difficulty understanding and accepting homosexuality, theirs was even more challenged.. I think that is very thoughtful, yes?
WARNING: there is a scene of group sex, that might not settle down with some readers. Though for me, after a deep thought, think that it's part of dealing with your sexuality when you're young. I don't think it's cheating, it happens during the trip (Ned & Oliver doesn't state their status of relationship at that time), and I actually believe that experience forms deeper understanding between Ned and Oliver about their own feeling for one another

This is a very cute and sweet short story which also had some funny moments. I think that when Ned let his irony show, the book had its best moments.
I must confess that I was mislead by the blurb, I was expecting a different and angstier story, but I was happy with the actual plot. Ned was always extremely aware of what was going on and I really appreciated the delicacy with which he initiated his best friend Oliver to same-sex experiences. Their journey to Seattle was a real journey of discovery, haunted by the uncertainty of what was to come.
I think the first - longer - part of the story, which takes place in 1970 - was more satisfying than the last, even if there was a moment in the first part that ripped me out of the story. The last part - the 1985 reunion - was weaker in comparison. Usually it's the reunion part that I prefer in this kind of story, so that's the reason why I can't give a higher rating, because I wasn't really satisfied with it. It probably depends on the fact that Oliver and Ned didn't drift apart dramatically, so the reunion was very sweet.
It's a very beautiful friend-to-lovers, coming-out, first-time story, sometimes bittersweet, with a nice touch of humor.

I was intrigued the first time I heard about this story, drawn in later on by the cover and blurb and ultimately totally engaged, entertained and satisfied when I finally read the story. What's not to love about a love that spans four decades and is still going strong. As much as I was looking forward to reading it I did wonder how K.Z. would pull off their long separation and eventual reunion in a novella length but I should have known better than to worry, it worked perfectly. Oliver and Ned are great characters and their story was beautifully told by an author whose lovely prose and witty, gritty and emotional stories never disappoint. Highly recommended.

I liked this one. It was sweet and I just loved it when Ned or Oliver would talk about the 'electric melty tingles'. It was just so cute.
While I did like it, I think I would have enjoyed it more if there had been more details on what happened during the years they were apart. Those twelve years are just glossed over in one chapter and I would have liked more details about what happened and not just the vaguest basic ones. Even though they didn't see each other during that time, I think I still would have preferred to see what they went through and seen how they kept track of each others lives through their Ned's family.
The blurb is slightly misleading. It makes the story seem more suspenseful and have more things happen in it than what really happens. Some of the things it says happen fall under the twelve years that are glossed over so we don't really get to experience the full glory of the coming out this story is supposed to represent. As it was, like I said, it just gives the basic explanation of it. :-/

I think the blurb is a little misleading as the MCs spend a hell of a long time apart with no contact but it was a nice enough read.
The first 2/3 of the book was typical friends to lovers fare then the boys were separated due to... something that wasn't ever really explained and I still am not sure I understand. 15 years pass in which there is no contact whatsoever (these are BEST FRIENDS, you know) then they meet up again. Nothing is made of the fact that, despite having revealed his sexuality in a pretty dramatic way (including a strange foursome with some strangers), MC2 went back into the closet, or that he was in contact with MC1's family yet made no effort to contact MC1 himself...
The chemistry between the MCs was smoking, though, and the sex was hot. I did enjoy the first 1/2 of the book but the super-speedy fast forward made what should have been an emotional and heart-warming reunion a let down.

For such a long time span it was a short story. The reason I didn't rate this higher is that the majority of the story really is concentrated on the beginning of the relationship. I would have loved to have it more evenly spaced. I still loved the story of first love and how it can fail when the world is against it.

I loved the angst and pain and the romance and the anticipation. It's a rollercoaster and those are my favorite. The kind of book where at the end you want to go again.

Awwwww... this is funny, sweet, sad, beautiful, and so romantic. Perfect read when you just need to read something sweet and warming. The end is a bit rushed though.

Perfectly titled and the perfect description for the feeling I get when reading a great m/m romance story – I loved this book!
Something about the author’s voice made everything very vivid for me. It started with the descriptions of everything and continued through the witty humor (ex: War and Pees) and on to the emotional tugs (both highs and lows). This was a fabulously original coming out story that also dealt with separation and love rekindled.
I was originally a little worried about the time period for the start of the book (1970) because even that not too distant year feels “historical” to me (LOL), but I didn’t need to worry. The story felt very contemporary. The year was important to set the stage for attitudes and actions at that time, and also contributed to some of the great humor which in turn stirred up a few memories!
I loved the relationship between Ned and Oliver and was heartbroken when their paths went in separate directions for too many years. I would have loved to see more detail (and length to the story) once they reunited, but I also loved the creative twist to the telling of their story at the end of the book.
While I have quite a few of the books by this author, this was the first one I finally read. Shame on me for waiting so long! I can’t wait to continue with more:)

This was a departure from any other M/M romance I've read to date. This is a coming of age story about 2 young men who struggle with their sexuality, identity and self-image as they cross the threshold into adulthood in their small New England town set in 1970's America. This struck a personal chord for me as I also grew up in the seventies and can't resist the promise of nostalgia that comes with reading a book set in that groovy decade...Being that I'm alive and well and have yet to hit 50 years of age, I had to chuckle when I saw "Historical" listed among the genres on the book's GR main page. However, when I read this book, I was struck by how much has changed for the LGBT community since that time, which somehow made the "historical" tag seem more appropriate.
This story is about Ned and Oliver. The two childhood friends emerge into young adulthood only to discover that their feelings for one another have deepened and evolved into something far more than friendship...and we follow the journey of their unique relationship as they navigate the obstacles of life and love over the next forty years.
Highly recommended.

Ned and Oliver have been friends for years and Ned’s in love with Oliver, who is straight and about to get married. He calls up Ned freaking out, leaves the bride at the altar and takes off with Ned to Seattle until the storm dies down. He confesses he’s gay and Ned’s in heaven. They have 5 days of bliss and then reality sets in and it’s 15 years before they manage to reconnect. Despite moving on, neither manages to forget the other. Most of the story takes place in 1970 (is that an historical) but it ends in 2010. It was a beautiful story and while I don’t generally like separations like that, it didn’t last that long on page and I think it made sense for the time and their lives. It was an adorable ending, and yes, there is an m/m/m/m menage scene which some people may find … objectionable maybe? but I thought War and his “lickin‘ stick” were appropriate. I think everyone will enjoy this poignant, but not sad, story.

This is a friends turned lovers type of story. I picked it because it sounded like a sweeping romance that spanned years and I really like those. But this just wasn't that. For me it was a 88 page book. The first 50ish pages were just the two men's first encounter. Then there are about 10 pages that is just the narrator's version of the passing of almost 15 years. Then there are ten pages that resolves the storyline. Then the last 8 jumped from 1985 to 2010 to just wrap it up. I just felt like it needed more to fully deliver on the blurb.

This book was very short. I started it when I got up this morning, and I was done by 9 a.m. The story was very simple, and the intimate scenes were quite detailed.
In 1970, social pressures have made it so that Ned Surwicki has not officially come out of the closet. But it doesn't mean that he cannot moon over his best friend, Oliver, who was getting married. I loved Ned. He was honest. In 1970, things were different, people were less accepting, and Ned acknowledged that but he never tried to be anything but himself - a lesson that most people, gay or straight, should learn.

Electric melty tingles. Oh, that's the book's name, too? What a coincidence, 'cause I got 'em reading this sweet, sweet story. I laughed, I cried, I "awwww'd", and even squueed like a fangirl on occasion. Alternately, I wanted to hunt down Oliver and Ned, give them a shake, and tell them in no uncertain terms to get their butts back together where they belonged.
A gorgeously written tale of love and romance that time and distance couldn't destroy. Highly, highly, highly recommended.

As usual, KZ has written an intelligent and sexy book. The setting of the first part, circa 1970, was interesting to revisit (for those of us who might have been living then). The train ride was, to me, the heart of the story - almost like Ned and Oliver lived a lifetime in those five days. But seriously (SPOILER AHEAD) 15 years apart?! Made my heart hurt. The lovely resolution made up for it though.

One of the best friends-to-lovers, coming-out stories I've read. Loved that it spanned such a long time in the relationship but would have liked it better if the author had given us more of what happened during their long separation. Heart warming, sweet, sexy and sad at times, the story and characters wrap you up and it's impossible to put down.
This is the first book I read by this author, looking forward to reading other titles.

Short but sweet story. The book itself spans a lot of years, but even though it's not a lengthy novel, it doesn't fall short. Even though (as always) I would wish for more about Ned and Oliver, this story doesn't need more. We get to be a part of the start of the relationship, both starts in fact and the way it's presented is very well done. And as far as the title goes? This book spans a period of 40 years. Ned and Oliver have been friends all through high school but Ned has been secretly in love with his friend for a while. I liked the easy, loving relationship between the two men and there was a good amount of humour thrown into the story, too. I liked how the story came full circle when we got to the end and met their neighbour, Anthony. A very enjoyable read.

April 27, 2011I'm not sure how to rate this one, so I'll refrain from giving it stars for now. I really enjoyed most of the book, but I'm still in turmoil over the last portion. Since I can't decide if I'm upset with the characters (which would be unfair to the author) or if I'm dissatisfied with how the storyline played out, I'll let my thoughts and feelings settle without throwing around stars.

This is such a cute and touching story. It's so easy to fall in love with Ned and Oliver and share in their exploration of life, love, and their circuitous relationship. My only complaint is that the book was too short. I would have liked to have more.

How the author managed to pack such a complete story in such a short book, I'll never know. Yes, I was wishing for a little more about the years they were separated but I didn't feel cheated or anything. Such a sad but sweet story about two men in love with each other but neither working hard enough to stay together until 15 years later. Loved it!

I really enjoyed this story of two young men torn apart because their families had trouble dealing with their coming out. It rang true-to-life for me, having had a brother-in-law break an engagement to a lovely young lady when he finally accepted he was gay.

Ned and Oliver were enjoyable characters and it was great to see that span of time through their lives. I did feel like something was missing for me emotionally, but than again that is just me (could be my mood, etc). I liked the story and will check out other Snow reads.

Very good read, althouh overall I found it a bit unbalanced. I would have appreciated it, if their life after age 21 would have been told as detailed as up to the point of their separation. So, it felt a bit rushed.
