America's favorite devotional, now in its 35th year with more than 20 million copies sold, Daily Guideposts is a trusted companion, helping readers to live and grow their faith every day. Every year since 1977, Guideposts has published Daily Guideposts , a devotional guide containing short inspirational pieces to be read each day of the year. They are designed to bring readers closer to God and their faith by helping them to live fuller, richer lives. Each piece offers a personal perspective on faith, love, inspiration, and understanding. With this year's theme of 'Growing in Love,' Daily Guideposts is tapping into a subject that is a key to spiritual growth. Each Daily Guideposts devotional a short Scripture verse for reflection; a true, first-person anecdote that shares the ways God speaks through ordinary life events; a brief prayer to put the day's message to work in each reader's life. By taking a few minutes each day for reflection, Daily Guideposts readers will become more aware of the spiritual richness in their lives.
Why I wanted to read this book: I have many daily inspirational books that I've purchased for myself over the years. Usually I find them when I'm depressed, sad, or need to ratchet up my faith. Jessica from Phenix&Phenix sent me an email asking if I would like to review a copy of this book and it couldn't have been better timing as I was finding myself very blue about my son leaving for the Marines, having strained relations with my parents, and encountering some rough patches in my own marriage. I eagerly said yes because I needed to refill my glass of faith, hope, and perseverance.
What worked for me:
* I've read the Bible through in its entirety in one year but I don't know scripture by heart or sometimes where to look for uplifting verses. What I always like about Guideposts is that each day's entry starts with a verse that has a direct correlation with the true, first-person story that follows.
* You know that saying, "misery loves company?" Well, I truly believe that for those of us who need to find something spirit-lifting, like to immerse ourselves into stories of people who have felt at one time in their life much like we do, but have found a way to overcome it. This is what I enjoy about this book so much. I don't have to be miserable. I can find a story that may relate to how I am feeling at the time or how I may have felt at one time and learn from their experience. * It's beautifully laid out and easy to read. There is also a bookmark that has been sewn into the book for easy use. At the end of each month there are places for you to make your own impressions of your day. I like that and will use it to keep track of how the daily story may have impacted my attitude and enjoyment of the day.
Recommend? I would absolutely recommend this book to my friends that are spiritual, religious or are just looking for a different way to start their day. I have a personal story to share about this book. As most of you know my oldest son is currently at bootcamp for the Marine Corp. His letters home have been wonderful, sad, silly, and very insightful. Just a few weeks ago I received a letter from him that found him questioning if this was the life for him. Should he be a Marine? I sat down and wrote him a 4-page letter detailing my thoughts and sharing some life experience with him. My son at times has said that he doesn't believe in God. Yes, that breaks my heart a bit, but I will not judge him for his views. He's entitled to feel that way and we never really put pressure on each other to sway the other person's beliefs. But I did go to January 14, 2011(His Graduation Date) in the Guideposts and what I read shocked me. The topic of the day was **** To Say Good-Bye. To me that signified saying goodbye to his old way of life and saying hello to the new man he will have become. Under the date the title of the story was ****** THE SHAPE OF CHANGE. So I did what any mother would do. I made a copy of this and wrote my thoughts on the bottom and included it in with my letter. Long story short, that story changed the way I viewed my son's questions and inspired me to write him a letter that was filled with optimism, understanding of his fears, and uplifting his own spirit.
I grew up in church, so the name of Guideposts has been familiar to me my whole life. This book of devotionals lives up to its familiar name. Guideposts has become synonymous with quality in materials for prayer and reflection, and this book is no exception. The Introduction tells me that the theme for this collaborative effort is "Growing in Love." Each day in the book is one page, with a Bible verse at the beginning and a short prayer at the end, with a true, first-person narrative in between. Each month is preceded by a lovely black-and-white photograph of a lighthouse, with a Bible verse somewhere in the picture. The end of each month has a blank section titled "Seeds of Love" in which the reader can record something God has been doing in his or her life on one line for each day of that month. The end of the book contains a section titled "Fellowship Corner," which lists all of the fifty-five contributors for this devotional, complete with pictures of the people and their thoughts of the past year.
I can really appreciate the collaborative effort put into this book, as each devotional is unique and well thought out. The various viewpoints of the different writers are quite interesting, especially since I know they can all be depended on to believe in and write about the Word of God. While I obviously have not read through every page in this devotional since the time I received it from the publisher, I plan on continuing to use it in the coming new year as part of my personal time with Jesus.
I've been starting my day with this excellent daily devotional book for many years. The devotions aren't theologically deep and complicated, but warm, thought-provoking and uplifting. After a couple of months you feel that you know the contributors personally. Often I have to resist the urge to "read ahead".
Have been a reader of Guideposts almost my whole life. Granny had a subscription and read it, then gave it to Mom, then me and my sister Tracie got it. More often than not, it's exactly what I need to read or "hear" on any given morning.
This treasure trove of encounters with various aspects of the Christian faith, written by 55 contributing writers from all over the USA, is so captivating that it is highly likely that you will find yourself wanting to read more than one day’s entry at a time. The contributors range widely in the paths that they have chosen along life’s way, yet all are bound together by their solid belief in the one true Savior, a belief that has enabled them to survive many a storm.
In a section called “Friendship Corner” we are introduced to all the contributors one by one, as they recount what the key elements of the last year have been for them and their loved ones. The personal focus in this section of the book allows one to come to know them as friends and companions on the journey that the reader takes with the Lord. Told in direct speech, the entries round out the lessons that the contributors share with us as we traverse the year with the assistance of this invaluable guide to Christian living that provides a one-page devotional lesson for each day of the year.
Though the encounters are each unique, the style of the whole book is marked by its liveliness, humor and sense of compassion for, and empathy with, others. Each entry consists of a single true, first-person story, starts with a single Bible verse that inspires reflection, and ends with a short, relevant prayer of the contributor for the day. In addition, there is a range of special features that provide additional insights into different aspects of Christian living, as well as short contributions made by readers of previous Daily Guideposts. The special features include lessons in downsizing, coping with change, overcoming disappointments, surviving depression, renewing marital commitments, and moving home. In addition, Mary Brown ponders the seven images of Jesus starting with “I am …” during Advent.

This book is a celebration of the 35th year anniversary of Guideposts and is a beautifully written book with a gorgeous cover. The devotions tell us in what ways God is in all of our lives and it only takes 5 minutes a day to enjoy this book of devotions. This would make a great Christmas gift to anyone on your gift list.
This Christian devotional was a page a day, with a passage from the bible, then a story from someone that relates to the teaching in the passage, then finished off with a quote. I had a nice experience with this devotional, but don't feel I learned anything from it. It was just another book to add to my daily morning reading routine, where I read my bible, the Qu'ran and whatever devotionals I have for that year. While I appreciated all the content, it is just not one I would rush out to buy. Most people who enjoy devotionals may feel differently and that's okay with me.
This is a year long book ~ a scripture for each day of the year. I've been reading daily guideposts for the last four years. I find them very uplifting and often heartwarming. The perfect 5 mintues of peace everyday.
I didn't read all of this during 2011, so I'm starting over in 2012. I have always loved Guideposts and my mom always gives it to the women in our family for Christmas presents. It's a tradition I'm happy to be a part of now.
