I first came across this book (and interviewed Maggiore) when I broke a story for Mother Jones in the 1990s about the Foo Fighters' association with HIV denialists, including Maggiore.

I had no idea what I was in for. The "science"-based refutations were the easiest to handle; the calls for my slow, torturous death were another matter.

All I can say is that I put the level of these people's fanaticism in league with Holocaust deniers and extremist cults. They've done tremendous damage in South Africa and beyond. Unfortunately, Maggiore's damage extended to her own daughter's death to AIDS-related pneumonia a few years ago: http://articles.latimes.com/2005/sep/....

From what I understand, she still doesn't believe in the coroner's findings. Unfortunately, it's too late to matter.

This is DIARRHEA in book format.

The author of this denialist horseshit was in SERIOUS AND SEVERE DENIAL about her condition.

The author was HIV positive and believed that the HIV virus was harmless and possibly not even real. She believed life saving anti-HIV drugs are toxic poisons and should be avoided.

The author AND her young daughter are now both dead from untreated hiv infection.

This was one of the most amazing books I had ever read and really made me think critically about the medical establishment. For that, I'm grateful. Christine Maggiore, though, paid the ultimate price for her hypothesis (that HIV doesn't cause AIDS and that, rather, it's lifestyle factors and stress that lead to AIDS and death). Christine died a few years ago. It would be incredibly irresponsible to support this book. I'm deeply saddened by the loss of Christine and her daughter (who also died of AIDS).

I don't even remotely agree with what is being said, but for some reason I had to hear it. If there are people who are determined to risk their children's health and in some cases, lives -- I had to be witness to the evidence they put forth in defense. Interesting case.
