Her Long-Lost Husband

Rate this book
E.R. doctor Olivia had mourned the loss of her soldier hero husband two years ago, even though a tiny part of her believed he was still alive. She'd moved on with her life, until that unmistakable, husky voice interrupted her wedding. As she turned around, her heart skipped a beat. It was Gregor—the love of her life!

Working as an army medic had left Gregor unable to walk. But, despite the dark shadows under his eyes, his brooding good looks were as devastating as ever. Yet Olivia was not sure what she could hope for. Did he still love her—or had Gregor only returned to say his final goodbye?

I'm very torn on this one. I thought the writing was solid and fine, and the opening seemed very promising. But the disability cliches just destroyed it for me.

SPOILERS

"The stark contrast of the trousers that only seemed to exaggerate the extreme thinness of his thighs as he sat there passively in the chair." Passively? This is the guy who just rolled into a wedding ceremony and is about to call out that the marriage can't take place. How is that passive?

"He hadn't wanted Livvy to see him in such a pathetic state; to see him having to laboriously heave himself out of the chair when all he could rely on was his upper-body strength." If he's been in that chair longer than two months, he should not be having that much trouble transferring into a car. When I think of the complaints the Avatar movie got that Jake seemed to be struggling with transfers more than was realistic, this is just ridiculously over the top.

I couldn't keep reading. I skipped to the end to see if what I feared was true and it was. There's a surgery and cure at the end of this book. I don't hate cure endings because I'm a bad person who wants the character to be unhappy. I hate the cure ending because 1) it makes people think that SCI is fixable and those who are still paralyzed must just be lazy, 2) it supports the belief that cure is the only path to happiness.

The guys in books like this are always miserable, whiny brats who obsesses about how they are "pathetic" or "ruined" and they shouldn't ruin their woman's life by being with her. This is such crap and makes me furiously angry. Books like this support negative stereotypes about life with disability and I think that's a terrible thing.

Why did I do this to myself? I’m not a huge fan of medical genre but I have a few in my e-reader that I want to get through so I can move on.
This is my 2nd in as many days and again I was not a fan. This has nothing to do with the h on this occasion - the star is for her. Her husband however is a complete and utter moron.
Let me give you the evidence:
1. Why had he never told her about his childhood?
2. He only got in touch with her when he found out she was getting married again
3. He is a hypocrite- he preaches about life with disability and how people can still be all they want to be but then doesn’t accept that for himself he can’t provide money for his family or support a wife and child if he is disabled.
4. He was never going to tell his wife who loved him he was alive if he didn’t go back whole (until he had to interfere so she didn’t break the law)
5. He would have dumped her if the op didn’t work.
His attitude towards disability was actually rude and this is despite him being a dr I actually found it offensive and out dated

Her Long-Lost Husband

The story starts out with her, at her wedding, and having the husband, who was declared dead, show up and stop the event. But he is not the same as she remembers. He is now in a wheelchair. And in lots of pain. Their reunion and the ups and downs of two lost years have them second guessing themselves.

Oh my goodness. So I read this - from cover to cover. But that doesn't necissarily mean I liked it, does it?

This book has one of the prettiest, cleanest ending I've ever seen. Nothing like walking into a complete mess and having it all cleaned up in the best possible way within 152 pagees. Unbelievable? Well maybe that's what the title of this book should have been. Not only is the title unbelievable but so are: 1) the characters, 2) their circumstances, 3) the plot, 4) the subcharacters, 5) their profession, 6) everything about the book.

It was nuts! And not smutty enough. I wouldn't reccomend this book to anyone, ever.

It wasn't the worst book, but a seriously ridiculous mediocre read ...
