Perhaps the only way to read this book 40 years after its release is as a statement on culture and the relative acceptability of laughing at race/ethnicity/sexuality/disability/etc. at various points in our history. This book (and the ones that followed it, in what became a wildly successful series) was in every suburban American household in the early to mid-eighties. It "went viral" long before that term even existed, so much so that, in re-reading these jokes now for the first time in nearly four decades, I was shocked to see how many of them I remember, and to recall how many of them I told (generally to other children who were, like me, too young to understand) repeatedly throughout grade school without even realizing that my first encounter with them was probably in the pages of this tiny, shockingly inappropriate book. I can say that (unsurprisingly) there aren't many laugh-out-loud jokes in this book now. However, it was very informative to see how far humor has (and hasn't) come since its original publication.

Some of these jokes are so gross it can hardly get any worse. I loved it!
