Jason wants to punish himself for all the horrible things he's done, and so he's been lying low and wallowing in his guilt. When he discovers that Kieran and Eve are threatening his son, Chance, he finds Azazel so that the two of them can stop Kieran and Eve.

Kieran and Eve, now in possession of Jason and Azazel's powers, have the world in a chokehold. They see everything, know everything, and control everything. The only way to stop them is for Jason and Azazel to take back their powers.

But in order to do so, they must go through a series of tests, each pushing them deeper into their own darkness. If they get their power back, they run the risk of becoming the very evil they want to fight. But if they don't get the power, Kieran and Eve win and Chance is lost.

Kieran and Eve have established a utopia with their stolen magic and are brainwashing society to feel nothing but happiness. Jason is trying to pay penance for everything he's done throughout his life. He discovers that Kieran and Eve want to steal his son and are actively trying to track down Azazel. This is the sixth book in the Jason and Azazel series and the final book in the Jason and Azazel: Apocalypse trilogy.

That Last Onset is a paranormal story. It takes place five years after where the previous book ended. The narrative is told exclusively from Jason's point of view.

I loved the beginning of the book. The initial six chapters make a strong introduction to the state of the world and reintroduction to the characters. It was intense and I was excited about the story's potential but the rest of the story has a very different feel and tone.

The remainder of the story is spent in a spiritual realm. Jason and Azazel must navigate it in order to reclaim their powers and return to their physical bodies. In general, it's a literary trope I'm not very fond of because it tries so hard to be both meaningful and surreal.

The alternate timeline from the first book was interesting to read especially since it was told from Jason's perspective. There were a few scenes that recast Jason and Azazel as part of different story motifs which were kind of fun to read.

A bulk of the spirit journey is mainly a string of situations that forces them to take violent action in order to proceed. Some scenes challenge their faults directly or exploit their jealous insecurities. They reanalyze their relationship while getting to see a different perspective on events and have to consider their future. It made for interesting character development but it kind of got tedious the longer it went on.

The spirit realm is heavy with symbolism and rehashes the story's ideology of order and chaos. It references previous books and gives them a better sense of unification. The ending was predictable but it wraps everything up nicely.

That Last Onset is the conclusion to the second trilogy in the Jason and Azazel series.

Holy moly...WHAT A RIDE!! As if Jason and Azazel could send me reeling anymore than they already had. Aside from the fact that this book is told from Jason's perspective (SQUEEEE!), every single twist and turn had my blood rushing and my body so antsy that I wanted to jump into the book and never look back. I loved older, world weary Jason probably even more than I loved younger, badass Jason. And the time jumps...I don't care what anyone else says. They were awesome! He was given the option of letting go of all his pain and yet his love for Azazel was too strong. He would've gone through it all again just to be with her...SWOON!! And then the whole Red Riding Hood/Bonnie & Clyde angle...wow! It was all just so trippy!

So...why did I only give it 4 stars?

Ok. While I seriously loved this book, I found myself getting a little annoyed near the end. I love the whole idea of good/evil and light/dark being intertwined and inseparable. I loved the philosophies that Chambers explored. But I can't help feeling like the whole thing was a little too drawn out. I felt like the author did a little too much telling and not enough showing. I know she was trying to drive the point home, but I felt like Jason and Azazel got lost in the mix somewhere...like they were a second thought. I also felt a little disappointed at the end. Granted, I'm sure that is what will happen in the next book. But I still feel like they weren't given the kind of closure they deserved. I hate leaving a book saying to myself "That's it?" It gives me such an icky feeling inside.

But anyway...that's pretty much it. Awesome series! Simply awesome! I'll definitely read the next one, but I think I will give myself a few days to process my emotional reactions to this one.

Again with the time jumps! HATE THEM. This book is such a trip. Which was intended I'm sure but it sort of feels like a bottle episode. The first part doesn't but then when they get into the Spiritus Mundi it's like one movie vignette riff after another. It was interesting. I got all the things Chambers was trying to reference. I loved the whole Bonnie and Clyde motif and also the big bad wolf thing. These characters really go through some crazy s***. Lots of violence in this one. Overall what is the point? That darkness and light are the same? That the dual nature of humanity will always be in conflict? That love is a selfish, all-consuming, powerful force that no one can fight? That all's fair in love and war? I don't know, something like that. Not sure how I feel about the ending, but I guess it was okay. Sort of sad that this crazy ride is over but it was definitely time.

Ok, what the heck. When I was reading the first trilogy, I decided it was like Twilight meets the Da Vinci Code. Secret societies and strange conspiracies, plus a dysfunctional relationship between a damaged boy and a whiny girl who I didn't like all that much. It wasn't super-well edited, but it was entertaining and quick.

The second trilogy has gone off the deep end, though. What a mess. This last book is almost entirely a trippy journey through the underworld, where the rules and goals keep getting rewritten and then thrown out the window. In the end notes, the author says "I think the biggest problem is that I really don't know how I feel about it...And I found, by the time I got to the end, that it was too confusing."

I agree. I am confused and disappointed. I will not be reading the third set of books. And that's a big deal for me -- I tend to follow-though with things, to a fault.

It seems that recently all of my favorite book series are coming to an end. I am sad to see some of my favorite books and characters be done with. I was very happy that this last book was all from Jason's point of view. It picked up right where the last book left off, and I was happy that Jason and Azazel got back together, I mean I wanted them to be together from the very beginning but of course they had difficulty because they were constantly being hunted down and trying to battle their own darkness. I enjoyed the way that Chambers ended the book with the perspective of the Light and the Dark, very interesting. I am also glad that it ended with J & A staying together. Overall I am very pleased with the ending.

I was rather disappointed with this book. I didn't enjoy the setting or the characters really. For me, it felt like they had gone so far from how the author had developed them to begin with. I undersand that characters evolve, but this evolution felt wrong somehow. Reading it actually made me angry, but I finished it.

just when you think there's nothing she could possibly add to Jason & Azazel that could make it more interesting, she does. I'm completely addicted to these books.
