I am certainly disappointed by this book. I had high hopes that I would learn more about our financial system and what nearly destroyed it in 2009. Instead, I found ranting rather than teaching. Despite understanding and agreeing with many major points there was very little firm support of the arguments. Private equity has added little or nothing to society and the economy. Fine. Then why do so many big players still use it? I understand that it adds nothing to the system as a whole and adds a great deal to the bank accounts of the private equity partners but then why to all pension funds participate? There must be a selfish reason for them to or they wouldn't do it! Similarly, if the fee structure for hedge funds is so punitive, why do the super-rich keep flooding them with money? You are the expert! Tell me!

To aggravate me even further, a major thread of argument against the current system is the idea of digitization of financial assets being inherently bad. I quote:

"In fact, it is ironic that when Markowitz wrote the paper in 1955, it was difficult to test his thesis because of limited computer power and that today advanced computer power that permits every conceivable type of financial instrument to be deconstructed into 1s and 0s renders the very concept of diversification obsolete."

Complete hogwash and a misunderstanding of what computers do. Before the digitization of finance all financial instruments could be deconstructed into ~36 characters, the letters and numbers. The number of symbols used to describe something is completely irrelevant and yet from the tone it is clear that the author finds this one of his strongest and most disturbing points! Computers only encode information and process it as we direct them. To write a contract on paper in alphanumeric symbols or on a hard drive as binary does not change what it is. The alphabet is not the problem, it is the terrible contracts! The web of new contracts that stealthily mix all of the assets in the world into one pool is what destroys diversification, not the fact that those contracts are now electronic.

Overall the book is both too dense for a typical layperson but too simple for anyone with any interest and time invested in finance. A miss.

Explain in multiple ways why the current financial systems needs reform, but I don’t see any end of capital in the book!

Te drobne wady nie zmieniają jednak faktu, iż jeśli kogoś choć trochę interesują finanse, globalna ekonomia i ostatni wielki kryzys, „Death of the Capital” jest pozycją obowiązkową.

If you want to understand the financial crisis, and you want an actual practitioner to explain it to you, and you want that practitioner to be literate, well-read and thoughtful, then this is your book. Outstanding discussions of very difficult subjects; not objective, nor should it be.
