A delightful collection of Australian (and some New Zealand) bush stories, some funny, some sad, others pretty hard hitting. Very re-readable, I took just over a year to make my way through these 69 stories. Lawson created many wonderful characters, chief amongst them being Mitchell, One-eyed Bogan, Joe and Mary Wilson, The Giraffe, and many other loveable ‘coves’.
For some reason I had the idea that this guy was outdated, irrelevant and not very interesting. I was wrong. The stories are vivid and full of life, a joy to read.
A solid gold classic collection of stories. Essential for anyone who wants to understand Australian Literature. I'm not exaggerating when I say that just as English Literature starts with Chaucer and Shakespeare so Australian Literature starts with Henry Lawson. This is the root of it. Everything proceeds from here. The stories are beautiful at times, dark and troubling at others and there is hints of sadness mixed in with comedy. Brilliant, well worth spending time with this book.
