Love's Tangled Web

"Soon, I promise you, we will be married."

Darcy couldn't imagine why a Sicilian count would want their rambling Suffolk home -- much less offer a fortune more than it was worth...and agree to marry into her family.

She only knew that the down payment had been squandered, and her sister was nowhere to be found. So Darcy had to agree to a masquerade that made a mockery of her sister's engagement.

But Lorenzo di Tancredi was not the charming dupe her family had taken him for. He planned to repay them with an amazing deception of his own...

I don't know if this just hit me at the right time, or it was really that well written, but I absolutely loved it. As far as Harlequin's go, this is definitely a five star read. Of course, logic always should stay at the door. A young woman poses as her sister and finds herself unwittingly married to the hero. (Yup, it can happen in HP land) This had it all:

√ Screwball comedy (check)
√ OTT angst (check)
√ Scrumptious. alpha, stalkerific hero (double check)
√ Wacky heroine, but very lovable (check)
√ Delicious Evil OW….. I could hear her cackling! (check)

Definitely a fun ride and a great way to spend a couple of hours relaxing. What a pleasant surprise.

Not only did this book jump tropes but genres along with locales.
PG Wodehouse-que comedy of errors to the taming of the shrew by a reformed rake kind morphing to Sicilian vendetta and full on family drama. This book is one roller coaster ride.

I see I'm going to rate this right in the middle of the five stars of reviewers who loved it and the one or two stars who didn't. I think I could have gone as high as a four star, but I really don't like the heroine masquerading as someone else trope - same with heroine as stable boy, etc. . . and it went on too long for my comfort. However, by the time the narrative had reached the rehearsal that turned out to be a real wedding ceremony, I realized that this whole thing reminded me of an opera plot. With the pattern and tone of this story established in my mind, I could just go along with the comedy (farcical marriage ceremony, the six girl friends who called, the ridiculous amount of shopping that left the heroine trembling from fatigue) mixed in with the "tragedy" (heroine fighting off and then liking sex, the family ties to Sicily and the possibility of the hero's vengeance, the heroine's flight to London, etc. . ).

This is one of those genre-busting HPs that comes along every now and again. It's not rage-inducing as the Daphne Clair story where the H/h decide to live apart for their happy ending, it's just surprising. The plot twists were fun, however, and I certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from reading it. I was entertained, but not emotionally engaged.

RE Love's Tangled Web - I was not a fan but there are some funny parts, the h is an academic and the H is a rich Sicilian who is apparently engaged to her sister at the h's father's request so the H can buy the h's family home. The h's family is continually verging on bankruptcy due to the father's ill advised schemes. The h is called home because there is supposed to be an engagement party for the sister and her new fiance.

The sister has disappeared and the h's mum convinces the h to don a wig and her sister's clothes to stand in for the girl for one night. Apparently the sisters look very similar except for hair color and height, but the h is not very appearance oriented and can't see without her glasses. She very reluctantly agrees to the deception as the mum is terrified the H will back out of the deal and the family (mum, dad and sis - the h supports herself) will be bankrupt and penniless.

The H appears to accept the substitution and is all over the h being very lover like, he gets the h to agree to what is supposed to be a wedding rehearsal, complete with wild children and table cloth wedding train. Then the h finds out that it wasn't a rehearsal but the real thing, (altho as she did not sign anything, I am doubting the validity - but that is just me), the sister shows up after the wedding and it turns out she never had any intention of marrying the H, she is engaged to someone else but she is delighted with the money the H is throwing around.

The h goes with the H to his apartment, where he proceeds to repeatedly rape her (and the book tries to put it as forced seduction, but when a woman is crying and fighting, it IS rape even if later on she supposedly succumbs to his physical expertise), force her into a makeover (she now looks the perfect trophy wife) and she has to put up with a continual harangue of all his other women. Apparently this H has no problems with multiples of ladies at one time.

Then the H drags her off to Sicily, to put up with his rather horrid family - especially a younger girl whose parents are distant family and dependent upon the H's generosity, she has been long encouraged to believe she is going to be the H's wife. She is spiteful and the h doesn't understand it. The h is also missing her studies as the H forced her to abandon her thesis when he forced the marriage. When the H finds her studying some medieval manuscripts she found (she is a historian) he viciously rapes her again.

Then the h finds out that the H's mum was her father's sister, (so they are first cousins which is a bit ick as well) and when the sister needed help running the business when the H's dad died, her brother disowned her and blamed her for their parent's death. The H had talked about his mum previously and also talked about getting revenge on the family that abandoned her. (For what it is worth, given how hopeless the h's father is, his mum had a lucky escape by being disowned - that really isn't brought up either). The h also finds out she is preggers, so she sneaks off the island and goes back to England.

The sister explains her part in the whole fiasco, the H apparently approached her looking for a way to buy the house, they agreed to a sham engagement when the h's dad suggested it, but the sister wasn't willing to lose her boyfriend over it. When the boyfriend proposed, the H gives the sister money to go to him, then he tells the sister that he and the h are madly in love but not to show up until the wedding is over. The h thinks the whole thing is a big plot for revenge, but the sister points out that their mum is financially secure in a house that is in her name because of the H, and that doesn't agree with the revenge plans.

The H finally shows up looking for the h and wants her back. She is preggers and not financially independent at this point, so she agrees after he explains that he fell in love with her picture some years earlier.

So basically the H is in love with a picture and when the h turned out not to be what he wanted personality wise, he forces her to change, gets her pregnant by repeated rapes and ruins her life. The h has Stockholm syndrome by now, so she confesses her love and HEA.

Needless to say this one was not high on my list, I just couldn't get over the H's manipulations and forced seductions and the h's utter incompetency to DO anything but submit. I think ML meant this to be a humorous story, but I was so disgusted I couldn't enjoy it, and the HEA believability was an epic fail for me.

I'm actually surprised at myself. I expected to eat this up with a spoon, but the hero actually disturbed me too much for me to like it.

There was some humor in the beginning, but once the marriage occurs I just couldn't....

The parade of exes that called the house on the heroine's first day with him was just gross. Okay, I get it, most HP heroes are Lotharios, but that was just too much. Seemed like a sickness to me if he was THAT bad.

Also, the hero was too controlling and the forced seduction scenes too rapey (yes, I realize that's an uber-odd statement). As Boogenhagen stated in her review "... when a woman is crying and fighting, it IS rape even if later on she supposedly succumbs to his physical expertise". I'm a fan of some of the old bodice rippers but the fact that this poor girl was literally sobbing during almost every encounter pushed that envelope too far into RL territory.

What really ruined my enjoyment the most was the scene when he finds her reading books in the family library and rapes her because he's jealous of the friggin books!?! That's when I realize I'd be in a shite load of trouble if I were that heroine. To be afraid to indulge in my love of books, learning, etc. would kill me. It would destroy who I am, literally. Yeah, yeah, I know he creates an office space for her in the end and declares he's learned his lesson, but I still had the chills.

Don't know what's wrong with me. I don't usually take these things very seriously and recognize the distinct separation that is Earth and HPLandia. Friends I often agree with have loved this, so I think it's just a case of this pushing the wrong button with me. If the H's jealousy had been more focused on other men and less on her academic pursuits, I'd have been less skeeved.

"Love's Tangled Web" is the story of Darcy and Lorenzo.

And then there was no time for coherent thought as she slipped under the powerful spell of his seductive mouth. As his kiss deepened, an answering flame stirred and then raged through her trembling figure. Helplessly, and mindless of the innocent invitation, she moved her body erotically against him provoking a low groan deep in his throat as his hands began an experienced and practised exploration of her soft body. His fingers slid sensuously over the thin silk organza, Darcy moaning softly as his hand firmly possessed the warm, full curve of her breast.

This is SO my cup of tea.

The heroine is an academic, who gets so often caught in her dysfunctional family's shenanigans. When he sister runs away after being promised to a Sicilian count, her mother convinces her put on a wig, shed the glasses and stand in for her sibling. Never expecting the inane scheme to work, she soon finds herself under the hawk eyed gaze of her "fiance", who passionately kisses her- and right before she can escape, their wedding rehearsal turns real and truth is revealed!
Post marriage, there are reluctant passionate interludes. But what is the hero's motive behind his courtship? Or is there a motive?

Honestly, this was super sexy with loads of romance, sex and a good dose of angst. I love a strong heroine- and albeit she was dramatic- it was fun to read her quirks. The hero was angry, possessive and bit stalkery- what I liked was that he was 100% devoted to his wife and spend time defending and worshipping her. He made mistakes, but the confession at the end made up for it. I mean a man who cries when he realizes they're gonna have a baby? Doesnt get better than this.

Enjoyed it.

I was totally caught up with this novel. It seemed so damn modern that I had trouble believing it was as old as it was. It was published a year before I was born and I'm soon to be 30 years old now! The ending of the novel was hilarious, I couldn't stop giggling. So recommend it as a read for vintage HP readers!

I don't think I could ever rave enough about this book. It's entertaining, hilarious, and just wicked. She was a sitting duck and she had no chance in hell to escape him. He arrogantly rearranges her life in such a smooth finesse manner that she didn't see what was coming. I love their one of a kind hilarious wedding scene that kinda defies every girls fantasy wedding but it also defines in an odd way.

Nice read. 4.5 stars for failing to maintain the emotional tension in the middle of the book, and for the idea that someone falls in love based on photographs. That aside, still a fun, relatively light-hearted read. I love a smitten hero, and although it's silly, it's always fun when a dull heroine gets a makeover that totally changes her appearance.

Fairly typical HP romance. He does all this stuff to get her to marry him and takes over her life etc. Of course it turns out that he has fallen in love with her and is ruthless in his determination to have her. There is the prerequisite scene where she tells him she hates him after they get married but he makes love to her anyway after subduing her struggles. She misunderstands all his motives of course and ends up running from him. But in the end he convinces her that he loves her and they live happy ever after. There is a bit of an ick factor when it turns out that they are first cousins. Decent writing and plotting within the genre.

really don't get it. and there're lots of things that felt unfinished for me. the ending felt rather flat and just quick.
and there's no explanation about 6 women (really?!) who called at the same time. even other playboy-jerk-HQ-heroes stopped at one woman at one time. either you're a super playboy or a gigolo. pick one.

and you tell me HE had an unrequited love for the heroine?? yea right i could picture it, he spent half his time pinning for the heroine from afar and being a stalker, getting desperate too. and another half banging some other women. geez.

Just okay. Revenge trope with no follow through 😒

The heroine’s parents are in dire straights, about to lose their home when the wealthy Hero appears to save the day. He is to purchase their home and marry the heroine’s sister so the property is kept in the family.

The dilemma happens when the sister goes AWOL on the day of the engagement party. Her mother convinces her to don a wig and pretend to be the sister. Apparently they are alike enough to fool the Hero 🙄

Half the book is the heroine pretending to be her sister, up until the wedding rehearsal. Then as it turns out the rehearsal was in fact a real wedding so she is now truly wed to the Hero. The Hero reveals that he knew, all along, that she was not his original fiancée but he does not mind the switch.

He showers her w clothes and jewels to the utter exhaustion of the nerdy heroine who loves ancient manuscripts more.He whisks her off to his castle in Italy, he is a Conde, so she is now the Contessa. He gives a stern warning to his relatives to treat her with the utmost respect, or else… The warning was nit good enough since his disgruntled, jealous young cousin eventually shows the heroine the grave of the Hero’s mother and it is revealed that she was the sister of the heroine’s dad! 😱

The heroine now realizes that he married her for revenge against her father who disowned his sister when she married an Italian! She runs away back to England and mopes for a month. The Hero shows up, takes her to the newly renovated family home where he hopes to live w her and their children.

He never really thought much about the revenge when he got older, but had the family investigated when he started doing business in England. He fell in love w her photos at the start and has loved her ever since. He never really went through w the revenge.

Wow this book must've been so vintage if cousin marriages were considered ideal and actively encouraged. Let's just say I'm shaken. Anyway a colleague of mine was reading this book so I was quite intrigue. It was a short read, finished it in one sitting. It was weird how Lorenzo managed to devised everything smoothly. Let me just say it was soooooo weird but unexpectedly the hero was likeable. No emotional baggage, no angst whatsoever. I gave this book a 4-star rating because it was unexpectedly not so bad knowing this was written for more than three decades.

At first, it started out like one of those romcoms, or those screwball comedies from the 1930's. But then it lost steam, and got to be typical misunderstanding, insecurity, and the old "let me run away and hopefully never see him again, despite my "condition", etc.

The best part of this book is the Italian phrases, as I'm studying the language of my ancestors, and enjoy learning all these bits and pieces.

The first section before the wedding and later scene with Claire were hilarious and outside the bedroom their dialogue was great, most enjoyable as she was no doormat.

The story went downhill once they “married” and H threatens her mom and her with scandal lawsuits for fraud and divorce. He rapes her, yes she supposedly enjoyed after giving up but she should not have had to give up. He got vicious when she stayed too long in the family library deciphering old texts in dead languages and rapes her again, brutal enough that he apologizes.

The first cousin thing is icky and I doubt the bishop uncle would have agreed to marry them in a faux rehearsal.

This book has one of my pet peeves, the notion that girls only wear ugly glasses. There are lots of pretty frames and no one needs to wear "horn rims", not now or back in the 1970s and 80s.

I liked the book quite a bit - more like 4 stars - but the bedroom scenes and her thinking she loved him were hard to stomach.

The worst part? He says he didn’t try to date her in a normal way because he wanted to possess her totally. Run lady, run.

Reread. Strong story with emotion and growth, good writing. I’m not convinced that h could fall in love with rapist who did not change, or that uncle bishop would go along with marrying first cousins or with the fake but real wedding. The H is creepily over possessive. I can tolerate (ok, enjoy) HPs with jerky Hs but there has to be some change and a grovel, not the H patting himself on the back.

Can't finish it. Another too stupid plot: identity assumption where even close relations can tell one sister from other. Mind you they are not even identical twins. They are just sisters several years apart.

Mary Lyons creates entertaining characters who work well together, add colour and a distinctiveness to her books, except the hero; he was like a rhino in a curio shop. In fact, the "romance" ruined the tone of the book(nevermind the incest!). He never appreciated Darcy's character and took great pleasure in turning her into a trophy wife, who could also satisfy him in bed. Is that the behaviour of someone in love or extreme self-centeredness?
Darcy was also dim - what did she think would happen if you're having sex everyday without contraception? It would of been great if she had made an effort to thwart the hero - she was supposed to be doing her phd, but she just accepted him putting an end to that and getting rid of her glasses(wearing contacts all the time is uncomfortable)! She just sulked and initially did some arm flailing in bed.
They were supposed to be having great sex, which is how he controlled her, but their chemistry was non-existent. I actually think his character would of worked better with the ditzy sister.

the book was captivating at first. i felt der was something going on wid the hero during the masquerade. he did not appear fooled and i dunt understand how one sister cud pass for another unless they were twins! i found the heroine quite irritating and very childish. it was very obvious lorenzo was besotted wid the child (here i mean heroine lol)! she was the only one blind to the fact. i guess i cud have liked the book more but i've read so many books wid this trope and i kinda guess i'm fed up wid those immature and childish heroines like darcy.

All Darcy wanted from life was to be allowed to continue her academic studies in peace. So, when her headstrong sister and wastrel father landed the family in trouble she was reluctant to get involved. But, before she knew what was happening, she was caught up in a charade from which the mysterious Lorenzo di Tancredi wouldn't free her!
