A Polish mother bore Wilhelm Albert Włodzimierz Apolinary Kostrowicki, this known writer and critic.

People credit him among the foremost of the early 20th century with coining the word surrealism and with writing Les Mamelles de Tirésias (1917), the play of the earliest works, so described and later used as the basis for an opera in 1947.

There were moments when the English translations offered a glimpse into how great Apollinaire must be (I can read Spanish and German but not French). But the vast majority were quite musically dull. I don't know the translators but most of them cannot be poets themselves because the artifacts they created were not English poems. The exceptions were exceptional, like the stanza from 1906 that begins "I loved ghastly women in monstrous districts," though even then I had to rewrite two lines so they read better in my own head.
