I told this story for a cats-themed program for both Spanish and bilingual story time. For story time purposes, I just didn't like telling the story with props. I think I would love it more if I had flannel board art because some of the actions were a bit awkward. I did have the kids participate by making the animal sounds. Reading it aloud, I think, would work much better. I'll give this one a try in the future.
I wasn't sure whether my story time kids would like this book or not, but they did. I prefaced the book by asking what animals says meow and then telling the kids that the cat is hiding from the puppy, can you help me look for the cat on each page. It was kind of a rowdy group, but they were pretty focused for this story...
This is a good A,B,C / Counting book because it relates to things young children already know. For example today in class the people presenting said that children know what a dog and a cat are and they usually know what sound they make so it makes it easy for children to learn.
I don't like this book: it's choppy and awkward. It seems like the author wanted to have a sort of rhyming scheme or parallel structure, but it didn't work out.
