Producing Drum Beats: Writing & Mixing Killer Drum Grooves

Rate this book
(Berklee Guide). Whether you're into hip-hop, urban, rock, alternative, dance, electronic, jazz, blues, or country, drums play a prominent roll in the production and arrangement of a song. This book will help to explain everything you'll need to know to produce your own killer beats, from describing individual drums and how they are most commonly played, to MIDI drum sequencing tricks used by the pros, and the proper use of compression, EQ, and group effects when mixing drums. Over time and with steady practice, you'll be able to make these drum production techniques your own, taking your song production skills to the next level while at the same time becoming a master beat-maker.

I found this book by going through some required textbooks for various Berklee College of Music courses. This book was an official textbook for one of the production classes, so I didn't even think, I just bought it. My goal was to learn about writing more interesting percussion tracks for my music.

This book was published in 2010 and I cannot recommend it in 2021.

From the 77 total pages, the information presented can be broken down into 4 categories:

55% (42 pages) Basic DAW and Midi information - samples, patches, quantizing
19% (15 pages) Anatomy of drums and percussive instruments
17% (13 Pages) Mixing Drums
9% ( 7 pages) Writing Drum Fills

The bulk of the content in the book was probably very useful and relevant in 2010 but reads more like a history book today. Anyone that has casually played around in any modern DAW won't gain anything here.

The overview of the types of percussive instruments and the modern drumkit is good if you have never played drums.

The section on actually writing drum fills is woefully under-represented. This was what I had hoped would be the bulk of the content and it's a pretty short 7 pages focused entirely on drum fills.

The book also has an accompanying CD that was supposed to contain music and midi samples, however, neither of my computers with CD drives could read the disc. I bought the book new, and the CD was still in the sleeve, unopened and unscratched.

Simple and has very clear exercises available. This is perfect for people that have weaknesses in this category of music production
