Animal Math

Cheetah Math: Learning About Division from Baby Cheetahs

Rate this book
Cheetahs are very fast―and very shy. When two young cubs come to the nursery at the San Diego Zoo, the staff hopes they will help visitors learn more about the plight of cheetahs in the wild. Majani and Kubali are shy, but with the help of their dog buddies they become perfect animal ambassadors.

Kids can learn all about division from these baby cheetahs and their canine friends.

There are books about animals and books about math. This book tries to do both, and I think it is moderately successful. I would recommend to parents reading this book with younger children that they skip the math pages as the author suggests in the beginning of the book. Otherwise they will likely lose interest quickly.

Our youngest is eight years old and she complained that she didn't like the math pages. I was surprised when she said they were too hard and beyond what she's learning in school, especially since she was able to solve all of the problems quickly. I think she was just being grumpy and didn't like the blatant math lesson.

The format of the book offers one page of math lesson followed by one page of story repeated throughout the book. I usually prefer books that incorporate math lessons seamlessly into the story, but this is a good way to relate everyday math lessons and make the concept of division more understandable. I will often quiz our girls with similar problems when we are reading a tale, attempting to test their comprehension and help them see how math is used in everyday life.

Overall, I thought this was a well thought-out and produced book. I really liked that the book explains how problems can be solved using different methods and ways of thinking about the numbers. The narrative is fairly short and entertaining, the math problems are nicely presented, and the photographs are very adorable. I had no idea that dogs and cheetahs are paired together like this!

We enjoyed reading this book together and I am looking forward to reading Tiger Math: Learning to Graph from a Baby Tiger, Panda Math: Learning About Subtraction from Hua Mei and Mei Sheng, and Chimp Math: Learning about Time from a Baby Chimpanzee too, since they are all available at our local library.

We really like these books! The kids love the baby animals and really get the math and how it is relevant to the story and real life. I was also impressed with the different strategies used and presented for division.

Cheetahs from the San Diego Zoo are assigned special dog companions to help them adapt to their life in the zoo. Part of a great children's math concept series, this one concentrates on division.
