The UP is an awesome place to hike, backpack, or camp with its thick forests, Great Lakes shorelines, and high hills with awesome vistas. This book, though from 2005, gives fairly accurate descriptions of a number of representative trails int he region. You'll probably need larger topo maps to supplement the trails, but beyond that, it's an excellent guidebook.
A good overview of a great outdoors recreation region that's worth the drive. While the book is getting old, not all that much has changed regarding the trail descriptions and routes, so this book will be relevant for a while. The maps in this book leave a lot to be desired, though, so be sure to use more detailed (and modern) maps to ensure you don't get lost.
A useful and enjoyable book for casual hikes. Eric gives enough information to be comfortable without overloading or taking the fun out of discovery. Though quite familar with U.P. hiking spots we found new places to explore. We especially appreciated the book when traveling in unfamiliar areas when we had but a short amount of time but wanted to get out for a good walk. He is a very knowledeable and experienced hiker and one to trust. The book text itself is a bit on the small and light side but this does not take away from this being a good book to have to help you explore the U.P.
Nice selection of hikes, and the writing combines practical clarity with a joyful appreciation of the area's beauty. I wish I'd found it more helpful on my trip...by which I mean I wish I'd had a lot more time and stamina! Many of the hikes in here are in the 7+ mile range, so heads up if you are hoping for more of a couple hours in the woods versus most of a day.
This has a lot of great destinations! It's a great source if you don't know where to start exploring the wonders of the UP. Be sure to ask locals for tips though-they always have the greatest secret spots.
