Drinking and flying is a bad combination. Stephan Forks learns this the hard way when he rams another ship in spite of the vastness of space. A moment later, a strange woman stands on his bridge, looking around with a frown. She's clearly a figment of his imagination. Nothing in his colorful past of smuggling and smaller crimes prepared him for people appearing out of nowhere.
Maria Callaway has carried more names and appearances than she can keep track of, and she's bored beyond belief. When she runs into Stephan, he seems to be an amusing pastime. He's interesting, disorganized, pursued by pirates, and handsome. A little too handsome, actually. Maybe she should leave?
Neither of them can foresee the chain of events set in action from their meeting. Adventure and danger go hand in hand during the upcoming days, and the collision resonates not only through their own lives, but changes the destiny of the world as they know it.
"Touch of the Goddess" is the first book in a series of three, mixing mythology, science fiction, and romance.
Born in Sweden in the early 1970's, Maria showed a large interest for books early in her life. Even before she was able to read or write, she made her mom staple papers together that she drew suns in, and proudly declared them to be the "Sun Book." They were all about the sun. This fascination with books and writing lasted through her teens, but as an adult, her career veered off towards desktop publishing and technical literature.
Even on this winding road through very different employers, she managed to always incorporate writing in her work, making a living by making user manuals and documentations for computer systems. Not until the year 2000 did she find what would be her professional home at SSAB Swedish Steel, where she worked with logistics for the better part of a decade.
During 2008 she felt that it was time for a change, and she promptly enrolled in college and relocated to Florida in November that year. This change of lifestyle gave her the peace of mind and time she needed to pursue her interest in writing fiction, and this far it has resulted in three published novels; "Kidnapped," "Touch of the Goddess," and "Undercover," and several more are on the way.
The good advice that one shouldn't drive drunk is valid even for spaceships, a small detail that Stephan Forks ignores when he tries to drown old sorrows. He rams a ship manned by one single woman, and quickly dismisses her as a figment of his imagination. Only, when he wakes up the next day, she's still there, sitting in his bed, eating strawberries. So begins the story of the Goddess and the space rogue, and Hammarblad lets us follow them on some quite appealing adventures.
Being the first book of three, "Touch of the Goddess" lets us know the main characters and some of their history. It is a light and rather cute book that kicks off the series, but the author promises that the following two will be darker, albeit still romantic and very likely cute. Given her history of cutting off character's body parts or having them kill little children, I'm certain that whatever she comes up with will be interesting!
I personally encountered the character Maria Callaway a few years ago, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading the stories about her, Stephan, and their at times peculiar families and friends. During the years I have hoped to get to see them in book form, and I am not disappointed. "Touch of the Goddess" is a thoroughly enjoyable read that mixes mythology and science fiction with romance in a format easy to take in.
A genetically enhanced drunk meets beautiful Goddess resulting in instant and unexpected attraction. Maria Callaway is the strong heroine women want to be, and once he sobers up Stephan Is the handsome, powerful and protective man we want to be loved by.
Lovestory aside the adventures piling up around them are fascinating and made me want to keep reading. The descriptions of different environments and species capture the imagination without getting technical and boring.
In my opinion this is Hammarblads best book this far and I can't wait for the sequel to come out!
I am not a sci-fi fan, nor am I an admirer of romance, but I am now a Maria Hammarblad fanatic. I just finished an incredible journey in Maria’s book “Touch of the Goddess”. This book is exploding with adventure and charisma.
You anxiously find yourself on one exciting escapade after another, with the omnipotent Maria Callaway, and her dutiful, yet superior mortal Stephan Forks. You half expect to be exhausted by the continuous adrenaline rush, but instead find yourself eager for more. Hammarblad uniquely combines the unexpected with a space voyage unlike any other. A bit of deceit came into play, with a twist that almost had me disappointed, by a popular genre of our time. However, Maria’s exceptional writing style and imagination had me more than delighted that I continued reading.
The energy that emanates from these pages is powerful and spins your mind on several different courses. One minute you feel the discovery of ancient ruins as if watching an Egyptian discovery and the next minute you are free to roam through the idea’s of mythology. So many different possibilities masterfully combined, yet smoothly transitioned for an electrifying epic tale.
Hammarblad has found the perfect balance of thrill, romance and nail biting adventure. Her characters are original, alluring and certainly leave a lasting impression. This book was not only refreshing but one that I will not soon forget. I can’t wait to read Maria Hammarblad’s Part 2 in the Goddess‘s Saga “Wrath of the Goddess” and strongly recommend this book with ease. Regardless of your normal taste in reading material this story was ingeniously designed to offer a little something for everyone.
This is quite literally the worst piece of fiction I have ever tried to read. I'm sure the author is a lovely person, but she is not a fiction writer. I could say more, but I don't want to be mean.
A nice book with a good balance between adventure, cuteness and drama. I love the associations to Greek mythology! Can't wait for book two. Hurry up and write it already!
