In a word, phenomenal.

Most people know how to roast a chicken, but this fantastic cookbook will show you a variety of recipes that are worth trying. Well put together book, and when the recipes are well executed, you will be cooking the best roasted chicken of your life. Sometimes dedicated cookbooks (like this, all about roasted chicken) are a waste of space and time, but occasionally they become the benchmark by which you measure all future recipes of that type.

Every bit as good as Pizzalchick's roasted birds in Boise, ID, which cook the best roasted chicken I've personally ever eaten (in a restaurant).

Don't judge a book by the cover.

This book looks, and to a greater extent, sounds, pretty mainstream.

I have always wanted to pick a dish, perfect it, and make it mine. But what I normally end up doing most of the time is get some inspiration to cook something, look up the recipe online, enjoy it, and forget about it.

This book gave me exactly want I needed to move from my impulsive way of cooking to a more disciplined, enlightened, and more fulfilling style.

There are a few classical preparations, and a wide variety of really neat ideas for improving on a classic dish.

I'm not sure it's really necessary to have a whole book about how to roast a chicken. The technique is pretty easy. However, I'm rating this one highly because of the different rub recipes, and the ideas on what to do with leftover chicken after you roast it. Haven't tried any of the recipes yet, but I will definitely roast in my cast iron skillet next time and flip the bird several times to see how it tastes.

There's nothing really wrong with this book, it's full of recipes and it's beautifully designed. But it's really for sophisticated, dedicated cooks. If you like detailed cooking, you will really enjoy this one. It would make a good gift for the serious cook in your life, but it doesn't quite work for me.
