This is the third book in succession that I've read on the topic of sugar and removing it from your diet (or at least minimizing it). I think this was the best one because it has the most simple approach and for the content I give this five stars, but the editing was lacking as was the presentation- it felt self-published to me. The content is outstanding so I hope people don't judge it negatively based on the presentation. I never would have found out about this book if someone hadn't recommended it to me.

I am trying to follow this plan currently and really feeling like it's the right choice for me. Dr. Surrell includes a substantial amount of science to back up his claims about diet and nutrition, and breaks down common misinformation that's out there (like the need to do colon cleanses). The best part about his plan is that he includes an entire chapter on why artificial sweeteners are actually ok, and information about the most common ones (I recently discovered erythritol- which is a revelation! No sugar, no carbs, and I can sweeten my coffee). The plan he presents here does have limits to it that you have to get used to, but I like a baby steps approach when it comes to diet, because I feel like you're more likely to succeed if you take it that way rather than a harsh approach.

This book is all about a very easy weight loss program. It consists of only two rules.

Greatly reduce, or eliminate, your consumption of refined sugar. Greatly increase your consumption of fiber. That's all. The author strongly believes that most "diets" are much too complicated. He subscribes to the MISS principle (Make It Short and Simple).

When digested, refined sugar, is stored in the body as body fat. Among the potential, and reported, side effects are: it may lead to childhood and adult obesity; it may increase your risk of stroke, heart attack and vascular disease; it may lead to Type 2 diabetes in children and adults; obesity will increase the risk of cancer, and it may double the risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer's Disease.

Sugar substitutes, like saccharin and aspartame, are much less unhealthy than is refined sugar. A popular weight loss idea is to do a colon cleanse. Getting rid of that waste material will drop your weight by several pounds. Don't do it. The colon is supposed to have waste material in it. A cleaned-out colon can lead to very bad things physically.

The human body is over 60 percent water, so drinking several glasses a day is a very good thing. Fast food restaurants are increasingly adding healthy items to their menus. Another side effect of excess refined sugar is that it causes the body to produce more insulin, which leads to the production of more cholesterol. The book also includes a list of low-sugar and high-fiber foods, and those foods that are to be totally avoided.

Just two rules: how much easier can it get? This book is short, very easy to read, and it has a lot to say. This is very highly recommended.

I didn't listen to the whole book since I learned everything I need to know from the first chapters.

This is a life changer. Stopping only ADDED sugars and adding more fiber is the key to becoming more healthy. I started doing just that and have lost a few pounds. I don't believe in doing something I know I won't do forever; I can do this one.

I think I this book has a lot of value and believe in the dangers of sugar in our diet. But I’m not sure that sugar substitutes are as safe as portrayed in this book.

Before I ever picked up this book, I had gone on a sugar diet. If you know me, you know I don’t diet. I believe in everything in moderation, and to me it’s not about the weight. I had joined this health challenge a few years ago and one of the challenges was to limit, if not eliminate, sugar from our diet. I knew I couldn’t get rid of sugar completely, so I decided to only eat items that had under 7grams of sugar listed on the ingredients. I can honestly say, that I have never felt so on top of the world in my life, and when people (like my mom) who didn’t know I was skipping sugar told me how good I was looking, I knew it wasn’t just me.

So I thought I would really enjoy reading a “diet” book about the stopping sugar as the main rule. Dr Surrell made some great claims, and I felt I learned a lot of different health benefits to stopping sugar. I was a little concerned when his “no-no” list contained fruit, but later in the book he makes it more understood that it’s canned fruit. Fresh fruit is obviously very good for you, and is natural sugars.

I’ve gone back to my old ways of not limiting my sugar, but after reading this book I think I’m going to try it again. I’m sure I’ll still indulge in the occasional sugary snack, but just the way I know I personally feel when limiting my sugar is worth it.

So, even if you do not intend to follow this diet, this book still has some excellent information about general good eating habits and how to cut back the harmful things in your personal diet. I liked the way the author, James A. Surrell, M.D. approached the writing of this book. You can read the sections in any order and they still make sense. You can skip over parts that do not apply to your situation and still feel as if you have come away with more knowledge than you started with.

Let's face it, diets are not fun and it would be a lie if I said that I would look forward to giving up all forms of sugar and the treats I have come to rely on to give me a pick me up, but what I can say is that diet is by far less complicated and time consuming than many others that I have seen. I like that the author offered replacement foods for the things that would be axed from the standard diet and can easily see how this could be beneficial to anyone's health. This is more of a lifestyle change than a simple fix it fast kind of diet.

It seems as though the long-term results have been very positive. If you are searching for a diet that in doable, not a danger to your health and simple to follow every day, I suggest that you check out this one.

This is the book that got me to lose 1.33 pounds a week consistently. I'm still following this diet and I'm losing five pounds a month. The prose is folksy at best, but the science is sound and the method is, in fact, effortless (after a week or two of adjusting to the label-reading). I recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their health in general (since sugar is linked to the top four killers after age forty) but also to anyone who wants to lose weight without counting calories or making a huge effort.

I don’t like diets nor do I like non-fiction but this title called to me because, well, I do want to live a healthy life-style. This wasn’t an easy or fun read but was tremendously helpful in teaching me how to read labels and what I’m supposed to search for. However, don’t make the misconception that this is easy – it’s still not easy – it’s a lifestyle change and you must be committed to change your life. Make the resolution today!

Easy. Been hearing about this book and finally picked up a copy. Suggests an uncomplicated way to diet by reducing sugar, increasing fiber by simple means. "Forget about counting calories, forget low fat, forget low cholesterol, forget gycemic index and Stop Only Sugar". "Make it Short and Simple" Limit refined sugar intake to no more than 20 grams per day and lost weight. Full of sound advice that I am going to follow and see what happens.

This book was easy to read and made perfect sense. No rules and regulations that are hard to follow. Just easy suggestions in food changes. It even lets you keep junk food within limits of course. Just wish I didn't like sugar so much, it would make it alot easier to follow!!!! Hoping to lose lots of weight on this diet 5 pounds at a time. In the first week I have already made a small amount of progress and I'm delighted.

I found this book to be easy to read and follow. Some of the information in it, I found staggering. I didn't realize that so many things had sugar in them. The diet seems like an easy and healthy one to follow if you are looking to lose some weight.
