In 1627 a shipload of children makes its way to the colony of Jamestown. The children are not passengers, but cargo to be sold into servitude. Only two people aren't detestined for this sad fate—Kimberly Hollis and her mother, who are sailing to America to join Kimberly's father. The voyage won't be easy—not only is the main hold dirty and crowded with homeless children, the crew of the ship will have to battle a fierce storm and a pirate seeking revenge.
Christy-Award winner Angela Hunt writes for readers who have learned to expect the unexpected in novels from this versatile author. With nearly six million copies of her books sold worldwide, she is the best-selling author of more than 165 works ranging from picture books (The Tale of Three Trees) to novels.
Now that her two children are grown, Angie and her husband live in Florida with Very Big Dogs (a direct result of watching Turner and Hooch and Sandlot too many times). This affinity for mastiffs has not been without its rewards--one of their dogs was featured on Live with Regis and Kelly as the second-largest canine in America. Their dog received this dubious honor after an all-expenses-paid trip to Manhattan for the dog and the Hunts, complete with VIP air travel and a stretch limo in which they toured New York City.
Afterward, the dog gave out pawtographs at the airport.
Angela admits to being fascinated by animals, medicine, psychology, unexplained phenomena, and “just about everything” except sports. Books, she says, have always shaped her life— in the fifth grade she learned how to flirt from reading Gone with the Wind.
Her books have won the coveted Christy Award, several Angel Awards from Excellence in Media, and the Gold and Silver Medallions from Foreword Magazine’s Book of the Year Award. In 2007, her novel The Note was featured as a Christmas movie on the Hallmark channel. Romantic Times Book Club presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, and American Christian Fiction Writers bestowed the same award in 2019.
In 2006, Angela completed her Master of Biblical Studies in Theology degree and completed her second doctorate in 2015. When she’s not home reading or writing, Angie often travels to teach writing workshops at schools and writers’ conferences. And to talk about her dogs, of course.
This story revolves around a mother and daughter who are emigrating to Virginia from England. They are going to join the father who had severed as an indentured servant for 7 years in order to gain land and settle in America. When Kimberly and her mother arrive at the ship, it is only to find out it is filled with 100 children ages 14 and under who have been kidnapped or sold by their families to be indentured servants in America. I loved the historical aspects of this story and found the characters quite believable and interesting. My major complaint was that this book is part of a series novella and I felt at the end that I had been left hanging. I would much rather have seen it as a complete novel as I love Angela Elwell Hunt's writing.
Received this free on amazon for the kindle. And I am glad I did. A story for old and young alike. It shows what great faith it took for some to come to America. This story shows faith being worked out in the lives that were on that boat. Can't wait to read the next book.
