A short but very useful guide on the art of pastoral counseling. The first chapter on using our spiritual resources alone makes the book worthwhile. This book focuses primarily on the personal aspect of counseling versus techniques or methodology. The counseling relationship is examined from an outcome-based perspective affording you the opportunity to explore your own thinking as it relates to the topic. There's no formulas given only lessons learned from many years of experience.

If you're only going to read one book on pastoral counseling this should be it. Hart, Gulbranson and Smith have collaborated on this very valuable and practical yet short book on the key issues surrounding pastoral counseling. I read this in conjunction with a graduate course in pastoral counseling and found it to correspond with and reinforce the material very well.
