Why Smart People Do Stupid Things with Money: Overcoming Financial Dysfunction

Rate this book
Every year since 1994, Worth magazine has named Bert Whitehead among the “Best 60 Financial Advisors in America.” His unique “behavioral finance” approach goes beyond mere number crunching to help people understand and overcome the complex psychological baggage they bring to their financial decisions. Tested and confirmed by hundreds of Bert’s clients—including celebrities such as Andrew Weil, M.D., who wrote the foreword for the book—this system shows readers how to identify areas of financial dysfunction and offers specific strategies designed to help different personality types achieve financial freedom by working with their own natural inclinations.

certified financial consultant

I agree with Whitehead's investment style-- Index Funds (life cycle are OK), but continue with at least 50% in equities.

I'm not sure I'm in the same camp regarding real estate. He argues that you should always buy the the costliest home you can afford, and move up in a few years to a bigger home if your income goes up. He argues strongly against paying down your mortgage early (he thinks the investment potential is greater than any savings made by decreased interest in paying down the principal). He is right to note that real estate is generally the best hedge against inflation.

4 stars- a quick read

This book is quite dense with information. Unless you already have knowledge and experience in the financial investment field, it can be a bit overwhelming.

I think the book was a tiny bit dated but had some good advice. it was at it's core a simplistic retirement planning guide with some financial stability advice about not keeping too much of a debt load. It pointed out some of the mistakes I made in my 20's and yeah.. boy do I regret them now but we'll see what I can do to make up for lost time.

In any case I don't know.. I think it was a bit simplistic save when you're young so you don't have to save when you're older.. and yeah don't carry any debt.

This book had a lot of good things in it. Certainly smart people do stupid things with money. The author, Bert Whitehead, attributes this to verious financial "dysfunctions" but also financial illiteracy and a media that spews a lot of non-sensical financial "news".

Whitehead is well versed in personal finance, and also psychology. The field of behavioral finance is an interesting one, but perhaps too "touchy feely" for some.

I do like his emphasis on the importance of endogenous factors over exogenous factors in determining personal financial outcomes.

This book has a ton of the standard money advice you find anywhere followed by an interesting take on the "free" financial advisor system and strongly advocates for a fee-based system. The author argues that until our entire system of financial advisors shift to requiring a fee from clients, clients will continue to get whatever product will offer the advisor the most commission. Short and worth the hour or so it'll take to get through it.

Easy quick read. Great info about saving for kid' college... Kind of lost me with stock market strategy. I plan to reread parts as I progress with our financial plan.

There's a lot of great information in this book. Some was over my head but some of it was basic as well.
