Thomas is visiting the docks and is amazed at how busy all of his friends are! He wants to help out, but the other engines say they can do it on their own. It takes a big accident for Thomas to be able to prove what a Really Useful Engine he can be.
Wilbert Vere Awdry, OBE, better known as the Rev. W. Awdry, was an English clergyman, railway enthusiast and children's author, and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, who starred in Awdry's acclaimed Railway Series.
The characters that would make Awdry famous, and the first stories featuring them, were invented in 1943 to amuse his son Christopher during a bout of measles. The first book (The Three Railway Engines) was published in 1945, and by the time Awdry stopped writing in 1972, The Railway Series numbered 26 books. Christopher subsequently added further books to the series.
Down at the docks Personal response I didn't like this book, Down at the Docks, because it's a little kids book especially Thomas books. My nephew liked it. He likes reading about trains and seeing how fast they go.
Plot The plot of this story started out with Thomas on a hill and he saw everyone else working hard and he wanted to help and nobody would let him help. He a smaller engine and everyone else was a big engine so he asked almost every train, but they all said the same things. He saw these cars with a squid and a shark in separate cars and he was talking to Salty, the train, who was pulling them. Then another train came around the corner and was in a hurry and crashed into another train and Thomas help clean up and proved that smaller engines can do things to.
Characterization Thomas was the main character in this book. He was being shut down by the big, mean trains. He wanted to prove that he could work as hard as they were. No one would give him a chance and eventually he was able to prove that he could do the hard work like the rest of them.
Recommendation I recommend this book to little kids, ages five to seven and mostly boys. I would personally give this book a one star because I do not like this book, but my nephew would give it five stars because he likes trains and how fast they go.
This story barely had any kind of plot, so I didn’t find it interesting. I’m not a big fan of the Thomas & Friends book series.
The Thomas & Friends series is fine enough, but it just isn’t engaging for me. It feels outdated and I think the illustrations are very repetitive and the trains look rather creepy.
Not really by W.V. Awdry, despite the listing, this lacks any of the charm of the original series, which partly came from reflecting then real life railway operations and changes, which are completely ignored.
In this Thomas the Tank Engine book; he and his friends are all excited about the big ocean life display coming. The others tell him he's to small and little to do such important jobs. BUT when it comes down to it he's the one that is small enough to save the day!
Thomas would like to help "Down at the Docks" as the delivery fo the Ocean Life Exhibit is getting delivered but there just isn't anything he can do until Percy is scared by the shark...
