Ann Cameron grew up in Wisconsin. Today, she and her husband live in Guatemala. From her house she can see a waterfall and three volcanoes. Ann Cameron has been a teacher and an editor as well as a writer.
She says that writing is hardest for her at the beginning of a book. To get started, she follows this important rule for writing: "Apply seat of pants to bottom of chair."
This children's book from 1990 is about two young brothers who are trying to find the perfect birthday present for their dad. Julian and Huey want to get their dad something he really wants. His dream present. So they recruit their friend Gloria and together set out on a mission.
This was a really fun story with lots of detail and accompanied by lovely black and white sketch style illustrations too. Even though published quite a while ago, I think this would be an enjoyable one for many people.
The story is simplistic and reminds me of Beverly Cleary style. I read it to try and decide if it should remain on the library shelves as it has never been checked out. I think there are much better options today but in the 1990’s it was one of the rare books to feature a black family. It was important to have such books but, I wonder whose voice is missing from the shelves because Ann Cameron was given the chance to write it instead. Feels like an important perspective continues to be overlooked and that we are missing authentic voices.
This is the funniest children's book ever. We we're reading last night in a tent in the backyard, we were howling for a straight hour. So now I'm googling "Ann Cameron" to find out how we can get more.
Ann Cameron has a knack for humor and situations that the whole family can relate too.
Our kids are 5 (boy) and 7 (girl) and they both enjoyed it thoroughly.
Not the best children's book I've ever read, but definitely my favorite that JJ's brought home this year. With a clear plot, this book report should be a piece of cake!
Cute story about a boy who tries to get his dad the perfect birthday present. My students will certainly be able to relate to this dilemma, I certainly did!
