I found this book disappointing. Will continue with the series for at least one more book, in hopes this was just one of those inevitable bumps in the road for the author. I still like the characters, but that is unfortunately about the best I can say for the book itself. If this was the only book I'd read in the series, I'd have probably rated it 'okay' ... as one of a series I've liked, I gave it a 3 star rating but that was definitely because I'd like the previous books.

I found the plot rather rudimentary, as if not enough planning went into it and even some of the character interactions seemed a bit strained and contrived. One of my ongoing dislikes has been the 'backstory' which has been introduced in each book after the first of the series, detailed and identical in each book. The author avoided this in this book by beginning the story from one of the supporting characters' first person point of view, which definitely didn't work for me.

#5 book in the Henry Wright Mystery series.

I read this again on November 14, 2015. Here are additional notes:

This was narrated from Charles. Thankfully, he wasn't the victim. It was nice to have a different point of view. This story was slightly better than the two previous, but I'm not sure if that is saying much.

Original notes:

This is probably the last book I'm going to read in this series. By now, the characters are firmly developed, but I'm not sure I really like the journey right now. The author took this character, Henry, and over the course of a few books made it seem like he never was married before. (After living and having a long marriage to his first wife.) I get that. But in his new life, he seems so removed from the character I fell in love with in the first book, (which is the best book in the series, sadly.)

Still, this is a pretty decent read. I recommend it to fans of cozy mysteries, who like their main protagonist to be male.

Three stars.
