I found this book to be very practical. Having just finished reading it, I can't vouch for the effectiveness of the principles in it, but others have. I am looking forward to going over sections of it again. I especially appreciated the sections on diet and exercise. The section on medication is probably outdated, but still gives some useful information and insights. Some of the alternative things she recommended, I would class as New Age, but even that section had some things to consider. If you have arthritis, I would recommend reading this book.
Another helpful book for massage therapists and fitness instructors. I would also think laymen would find it easy to read and employ. I immediately put to use several of the exercises in both my personal fitness program as well as my students'.
I've read some of this author's previous books. Can't recommend it strongly enough. I scanned in some of the exercises so I don't forget them. Even though I've been going to the gym for years, these exercises got me focused in a different way on what I need to work on. Read it. Do it.
This is altogether an excellent book loaned to me by a friend who was much helped by it. Since I have been frustrated with the incursion of arthritis, I was very interested in the recommendations.
Nelson takes a thorough and scientific look at arthritis and what to do about it. She collates a number of studies on the disease and various treatments and their results. As a result she recommends an adjustment to one's diet and a gradual use of mild exercise.
She also examines all the quasi-scientific or quackish remedies presents giving a candid pro and con for each.
A very helpful book, which I may need to purchase so I can have it handy.
Miriam Nelson is a pioneer in women's health and the use of strength training to improve the quality and the length of one's life. This book addresses the use of exercise (aerobic, strength training and stretching) and nutrition to fight the effects of both rheumatoid and osteo arthritis. Using well founded test results and her own experience at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging. Although the book was written many years ago and much has changed in medical researh, the basis of this book and the common sense Dr. Nelson uses is still valid today.
Great information on controlling pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Diet and exercise information with supplement section to help you pick through what works and what doesn't. Great exercises and drawing so you know you are doing them correctly. I am going to start with some supplements that have anti-inflammatory properties. Hopefully all this reading and information will improve my arthritis soon and in the future so I can lead a pain free life most of the time.
got this book out of library; ended up buying it. New to arthritis, I turned to Dr. Nelson as I have all of her previous books. book contains info re what foods are anti-inflammatory, recipes, foods that aggravate arthritis, exercises to do with illustrations, explains everything in layperson's terms.
I have read several books by Dr. nelson which repeat the same message for almost any physical condition: excise and eat right. This book walks you through motivation and record keeping. i know writing down my exercise helps me. This is somewhat dated probably in the medication section and now we have fitbits to monitor movement.
