Gauch, Patricia Lee. (1997). Tanya and the Magic Wardrobe. New York, NY: Philomel Books.

Annotation: For children in kindergarten to third grade. The use of color in this book helps to set the mood and places emphasis on the fantasy aspects of the story. At the beginning of the story, when Tanya, her sister, and her mother arrive early to the theatre, the use of blues and grays are ordinary and create a nice contrast to the excitement in the rest of the book. Because children reading this book are likely to be curious themselves, they can relate to Tanya and really connect with this story. As Tanya, meets the old woman and they begin to play with the costumes the colors are bright and the illustrations are livelier. As the show is about to begin and Tanya is back with her mother and sister the colors return to the darker tones to transition the reader back into reality.

Personal Reaction: One of my favorite things about this story is the interaction between Tanya and the old woman. I think this is a story that could help a child become more interested in getting to know and spending more time with their grandparents. Another thing I enjoyed about this book is how the illustrations go beyond the words and extend the story for the reader.

This title has some strengths and some weaknesses. A plus is the descriptions of different ballets sure to please little ballerinas and sharing of the costumes building imagination. Not so great is the lack of flow in the story and the feeling that part of the story was missing.
