Melanie arrived at Cooribin. But whatever her reason for leaving London for Australia, love for David was no longer one of them. She had believed David could offer her a new life in a land of great vitality. Now she felt as far from him as the moon. Her feelings were a mixture of pity for him and anger at herself. And excitement over his brother, Jay. If Melanie hadn't known anything about falling in love before, she did now, and the feeling was frightening!

Margaret Way

Margaret Way was born and educated in the river city of Brisbane, Australia. Before her marriage she was a well-known pianist, teacher, vocal coach and accompanist, but her hectic musical career came to a halt when her son was born and the demands of motherhood dictated a change of pace.

On a fortuitous impulse she decided to try her hand at romance writing and was thrilled when Mills & Boon accepted her first effort, Time of the Jacaranda, which they published less than a year later in 1970; a feat that brought tears to her father's eyes. Some seventy odd books have followed resulting in a loyal readership whose letters provide a source of support and encouragement. A driving force in all her writing has been the promotion of her much loved country, Australia. She delights in bringing it alive for her readers; its people, way of life, environment, flora and fauna. Her efforts so far have not excited official recognition, but she expects one day she will be awarded the "Order of Australia."

Her interests remain with the arts. She still plays the piano seriously, but her "top Cs" have gone. She is still addicted to collecting antiques and paintings and browsing through galleries. She now lives within sight and sound of beautiful Moreton Bay and its islands, inspiration for some of her books. Her house is full of books, spectacular plants, Chinese screens and pots. She is devoted to her garden and spends much time "directing the design and digging and providing cold drinks and chocolates."

English Heroine travels to the Outback to meet up with/marry the Australian she met in London. Heroine hates her stepmother, so it seemed a good idea at the time.

Unfortunately, the man turns out to be a jealous, violent psycho. Fortunately, he has an older brother who is king of all he surveys and true Margaret Way hero material.

The scene on the cover with the gorgeous dogs is so minor that I'm wondering why the illustrator picked it. But then, I guess he couldn't depict the aboriginal elder threatening to murder a member of the tribe for romancing/raping his 15 year-old wife. The hero negotiates a compromise which includes a beating and no thought of the 15 year-old - at all - ever.

*pauses for that to sink in*

The triangle with the brothers is lopsided since the heroine quickly decides she doesn't love him. So not a lot of suspense there. She tries to be nice to the psycho brother, but he strikes her in the face for her troubles. The pyscho brother has a rich heiress in the wings, so his bad behavior is rewarded with a year-long honeymoon around the world.

The heroine is shipped off to an aunt in the city, so she can find work and recover from psycho brother. Hero eventually shows up to propose marriage for an HEA.

Not a ground-breaking story - but holy cow - what a time capsule of attitudes.

Eh. Pretty standard no-one-actually-loves-the-spoiled-younger-brother romance. The heroine is blonde (so blonde!) and pretty (so pretty!) and helpless (so! damn! helpless!) which drives all the men around her mad, from her father to the hero's spoiled younger brother to the hero. All other women are jealous of the heroine; all other women are all basically more interesting than the heroine, too, which is what makes the fate of neighbor Hilary so unfortunate - attractive, athletic, and well-off, she has a thing for the spoiled younger brother, and even after

Other than that, this is mostly remarkable for having a cover which is surprisingly reminiscent of the wall paintings in Pompeii brothels. No, hear me out: the way you tell who is male and who is female in the wall paintings in Pompeii brothels is based on their degree of orangeness. The more orange ones are male; the less orange ones are female. Now look at this cover. Same thing! (No verdict on the dog's gender, though.)

Another case of a good premise spoilt somewhat during execution. A nice little English Miss follows her destiny to the Australian outback, hoping to marry brother #2 but finding brother #1 on the way.

I liked the way the story begins and the family establishment of both the leads. The girl's original love interest, the middle brother David is spoilt, selfish and jealous of his super dude elder brother, Jay.

Girl's daddy remarries, so she wants to leave home, to avoid conflict with her step mother. She follows brother #2 all the way to Australia. But its the hero who comes to pick her up instead. And by the time she meets brother #2, she is already in awe of brother #1.

The rest is just about how she entangles herself from the messy younger brother and takes up with the hero.

There is a lot of time alone time the leads spend with each other on the journey. They are either exchanging sparring words or passionate kisses during the time. I thought the dialogues between them weren't nippy enough, just fillers.

Ok read. 3 stars.

English heroine (young, but no age given) goes to the Australian outback to see a man she met in London 5/6 months before, with a view to matrimony. He breaks his arm the day she arrives, so his elder brother, the hero (34ish) collects her from one of his workers and they end up alone for a night at one of his stations where there are contretemps with an employee. They have a real connection and share a kiss, but it is the brother she is to visit and so once they arrive home, the hero takes a step back for the first week. The OM brother is unpleasant and crazily jealous as the heroine is outstandingly beautiful in a fragile blonde way and he is pathological about his elder brother.
Things come to a head and so the heroine visits their aunt in Adelaide for 4 months before the hero comes to collect her.

It’s appealing in a way, but they seem to have some kind of wavelength that the reader is not included in, which makes it a little confusing in places.
Lovely heroine and hero though.
No OW.

Incredibly ugly cover for this nice clean romance set in Australia. Melanie met Dave in England and became somewhat infatuated with him. I think this was due in part to her difficult home situation. She and her father were very close but he had remarried and the step-mom was extremely jealous of their relationship and made life uncomfortable for both of them. Dave in the meanwhile has returned to his home in the Australian outback. He and Melanie are corresponding by letter and he tells his older brother about her and his wish to marry her. Jay, the older brother, suggests sending her a ticket and having her come out to see if she could adapt to living there. Dave in England is quite a different character than Dave in Australia as Melanie soon finds out. Read this on openlibrary.org
