George Bird Grinnell was an American anthropologist, historian, naturalist, and writer. Grinnell was born in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1870 and a Ph.D. in 1880. Originally specializing in zoology, he became a prominent early conservationist and student of Native American life. Grinnell has been recognized for his influence on public opinion and work on legislation to preserve the American bison. Mount Grinnell is named after Grinnell.
I took a pretty big risk with this one from a used bookstore, and it was the best book risk I’ve taken in a long time. Grinnell’s writing style was incredible and descriptive without being ridiculous—they packed some real meaning. It was fascinating to see his conservationist mindset up against the closed American exceptionalism of the others he witnessed who acted as if the West’s resources were inexhaustible. The compiler, Reiger, also had brilliant things to say, and allowed to Grinnell to shine through. Overall an enjoyable, informative, and easy read.
