For a book commissioned by the heirs of Ralph Compton, this is a pretty good western. The author’s descriptions of the sites are very good and the plot is active. Thrall, as a deputy, shot a man attacking his sheriff in the leg. The man returned to another town where Thrall was Sheriff and guns him down. He is left for dead. Thrall lives but a bullet near the heart, will not allow him to live long. Thrall seeks his revenge.
Asher Thrall is a Marshall gets shot by Sharkey who is getting revenge. One of the bullets is to near the heart for a western doctor to remove. Asher can go to a doctor in Boston and possibility get it out and live a normal life. Of course, no guarantee, he could die on the operating table. Asher turns in his badge and goes after Sharkey. Does get some morphine from the doctor for the pain. Asher has the chance to take Sharkey down with the help of some town people but is selfish, doesn’t tell them and wants to do it on his own. Asher is not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Asher loses out on getting Sharkey, ends up in Denver. As time goes on, he becomes very addicted to morphine, becomes a bounty hunter to get money for his morphine, gambling, soiled doves and drinking. The story was interesting enough, although about 80% into it I was ready for it to end, but I did finished it.
I enjoyed this book, but it was an average Western with nothing special that would have made it stand out. There were plenty of bad guys, but no real hero in a white hat. It was a easy, quick read that kept me entertained. The rating is actually should be a 3.5, but I will let others rate it a four to bring the average up.
