So far, very good! I would love to hike the entire trail, one day, and there's a lot of good info in this book, even if some of it is very dated. Also, the narrative story line throughout is as entertaining as hiking for real... well, almost.
Finished! Can't wait to hit the trail myself, now.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail in 1970 to now is so interesting. Other than the nature all seems to have changed-gear, food, distance, etiquette. I enjoyed the historical aspects of the trail.
An oldddddd version of the trail by now, but, since I live so close, I’m glad to know this historical view. I still aspire to get up to the shelter named after him — I will!
The beginning where he did gear, food, etc. reviews was interesting. The body of the book emphasized the folks he knew in the trail clubs and the inspections he performed. I prefer more emphasis on the individual's experiences. This was a go to book in the early days of thru-hiking and I believe the media's coverage of his hike lead to the beginnings of the explosion of hikers on the AT.
