Margaret Way was born and educated in the river city of Brisbane, Australia. Before her marriage she was a well-known pianist, teacher, vocal coach and accompanist, but her hectic musical career came to a halt when her son was born and the demands of motherhood dictated a change of pace.

On a fortuitous impulse she decided to try her hand at romance writing and was thrilled when Mills & Boon accepted her first effort, Time of the Jacaranda, which they published less than a year later in 1970; a feat that brought tears to her father's eyes. Some seventy odd books have followed resulting in a loyal readership whose letters provide a source of support and encouragement. A driving force in all her writing has been the promotion of her much loved country, Australia. She delights in bringing it alive for her readers; its people, way of life, environment, flora and fauna. Her efforts so far have not excited official recognition, but she expects one day she will be awarded the "Order of Australia."

Her interests remain with the arts. She still plays the piano seriously, but her "top Cs" have gone. She is still addicted to collecting antiques and paintings and browsing through galleries. She now lives within sight and sound of beautiful Moreton Bay and its islands, inspiration for some of her books. Her house is full of books, spectacular plants, Chinese screens and pots. She is devoted to her garden and spends much time "directing the design and digging and providing cold drinks and chocolates."

The Hero Zero tortures the doormat heroine with a homicidal, mental-asylum-escapee Other Woman (who almost did succeed in killing the doormat on at least two occasions) because he thinks jealousy is fun and he wanted the doormat to have some time to really make up her mind about him. Really, twelve chapters, for this garbage conclusion?

The one star is for the Emu named Joe, a secondary character who was the real hero of the piece.

This is a guardian/ward story set in the Outback. Hero runs the mighty King Station and heroine is his distant cousin who grew up on the station until she was twelve or so. Eight years later she's back after her father's death and waiting to turn 21. The hero has a stepmother and a stepsister and brother living in the house. There's also a conniving neighbor (OW) and the aboriginal people who live on the station.

The hero was obviously smitten the entire story, and spent his time trying not to put the moves on the heroine. Heroine took awhile to realize her feelings and then was blinded by jealousy. There's a lot of action, as you can see and a lot of Outback descriptions that are really very interesting. The way the aboriginal people are described and talked about was probably okay when this book was published, but the great white savior attitude is a little much. There are a lot of descriptions of aboriginal myths and customs and hunting methods that are quite respectful. But some of the dialogue. *shudder* But at least the characters tell the OW not to call the child 'black boy,' which is progress, I guess.

This is the first story in "The Second Collection of 3 Great Margaret Way Stories" at Open Library.

Colby was happy and excited to be going back to live in King Country, her childhood home in the heart of the Australian Outback, still ruled over by her dashing cousin Dart King. He had been like a god to Colby when she was a small girl..only Colby wasn't a small girl any longer.

Delightful hero and heroine.

If you can ignore the blatant racism, this is a sweet story. I wish the evil OW would have gotten her just desserts and that the ending was less abrupt though.
