Georgie Adams is a British children's author and editor. She was born in Tunbridge Wells, and grew up in Kent and Sussex. She was an editor for many years in the UK and Australia, was co-director of a small publishing company in London, before becoming a successful writer of children's books. She has written over 70 books, mostly for young children. Georgie is married to artist and printmaker, Tom Adams, has two daughters and three stepchildren, and lives in a rural part of North Cornwall, overlooking the Kensey Valley.
I borrowed this from a friend who loaned it to me because of the gender in the book and this was certainly a plus. There is the sort of crude feminism in the book I would have loved as a little girl and even now this is the sort of story my sister and I would make up when drunk. I love a lot of things about it like King Codswallop being silenced when he tries public mansplaining.
I was less than thrilled as a teacher and a parent by the trope of men and boys being largely hopeless and incompetent (even when nice and well meaning). Even though I can see where this sort of an idea comes from and it DEFINITELY has a place in adult comedy: considering how little cultural capital children have I think it would be better not to go there. I was also deistrubed to find how overwhelmingly WHITE the cast of characters were (give them all an Oscar). when you look closely one of the pirates I think is meant to have a suggestive tan...but all characters are either definitively white or easily read as white...this is not reflective of the real social worlds most children live in.
I enjoyed that even though there was a pivileged little "princess" in the story she had short hair, was active and practical and I do not believe her appearance was alluded to even once. Also that mermaids could also be male but the female is normative in their culture (the book showed not told that). I loved that the villain was dashing and good looking even though she was soewhat two-dimensinal
I usually stay clear of this sort of mass-market simplified romp but this one ha some charm and I will be sharit with other people too! 3 1/2 and a smile
This book was good fun to read. It's about 3 pirates who go on a rescue adventure.
It gives children a chance to use the imagination and practise their voices for different characters. The pictures are also very good and give the children more to think about and discuss whilst reading the book.
I would recommend this book to early readers. It is a good book to use as an introduction to chapter books.
Samalta tekijältä kuin Kolme pikku noitaa, eli laatu on taattu. Isommallekin lukijalle (köh köh) kolahtava kertomus kolmesta TYTTÖmerirosvosta, jotka joutuvat keskelle merenneitokidnappauskartellia. Jännittävä, mutta ei liian. Ihana kuvitus ja hassut hahmot.
