Margaret Way was born and educated in the river city of Brisbane, Australia. Before her marriage she was a well-known pianist, teacher, vocal coach and accompanist, but her hectic musical career came to a halt when her son was born and the demands of motherhood dictated a change of pace.

On a fortuitous impulse she decided to try her hand at romance writing and was thrilled when Mills & Boon accepted her first effort, Time of the Jacaranda, which they published less than a year later in 1970; a feat that brought tears to her father's eyes. Some seventy odd books have followed resulting in a loyal readership whose letters provide a source of support and encouragement. A driving force in all her writing has been the promotion of her much loved country, Australia. She delights in bringing it alive for her readers; its people, way of life, environment, flora and fauna. Her efforts so far have not excited official recognition, but she expects one day she will be awarded the "Order of Australia."

Her interests remain with the arts. She still plays the piano seriously, but her "top Cs" have gone. She is still addicted to collecting antiques and paintings and browsing through galleries. She now lives within sight and sound of beautiful Moreton Bay and its islands, inspiration for some of her books. Her house is full of books, spectacular plants, Chinese screens and pots. She is devoted to her garden and spends much time "directing the design and digging and providing cold drinks and chocolates."

Margaret Way gets a pass where other authors don't, but not here unfortunately.

This started out a four star when the 17 yo heroine essentially blackmails the hero to pay for her university degree because her evil mother is married to his evil father. It didn't make sense when I read it, but I was kind of charmed by her blatant approach. The heroine knows her mother is evil since she dumped the h on the h's grandparents where she was raised thinking they were her parents. Death bed confession explains all. All except who the father was. In twenty years Evil Mom never came back to her child or loving parents.

The H is glad to pay for the schooling, and the book fast forwards until three years later when he sends her to visit his sister in London. Evil dad sent the sister to England because she looks like his first wife, and being evil and selfish he doesn't like the reminder.

The H and h start a passionate love affair where a Venetian ghost plays a part in getting them together then is ditched as a plot point. The heroine eventually meets her evil mother (no body does evil mothers like M. Way outside of the Greeks). Evil mother is gobsmacked as she recognizes her daughter right away as she looks just like h's father. Besides Evil Mom is lusting after the H, and she can spot a potential rival a mile away. How evil is Evil Mom? She warns her dear darling daughter if she doesn't leave she'll have a contract put out on her. Nice.

Evil Mom then confronts the H and tries to throw her daughter under the bus, but he doesn't buy it. With such dramatic protestations and hissy fits, I was waiting for even more and bigger drama with the Evil Dad and to see how the Evil Mom would play this out.

An abrupt HEA. Luckily the poor traumatized sister gets her own story so maybe we'll find out more in Cattle Baron Needs a Bride.

Miranda Thornton has a secret, but she only wants to share it with one person who happens to be Australia's most eligible bachelor. Corin Rylance exudes sex appeal, money, and authority but Miranda wont be intimidated by the man. When she reveals a secret that could destroy his family and throws in a little blackmail, of course with the promise to pay it back he is stunned.

Corin has had woman throw themselves at him since he reached puberty, but never in his history has he had a wispy curly haired young lady with a lot of sass charm him the way Miranda has. Corin never expected to find the one, but he knows she is standing in front of him. Corin will do whatever he can to protect Miranda and let her have the time to explore life before he professes his heart to her.

I gave this a 3.5, I thought the beginning was delightful, funny and charming. The middle captivating, especially when Miranda realizes Corin's feelings, the end....sigh...kind of fell apart in a loosely wrapped bow. I am glad I read it, but was left a little disappointed.

AUTHOR Way, Margaret
TITLE: Australia's Most Eligible Bachelor
DATE READ 06/02/16
RATING 4/B
GENRE/ PUB DATE/PUBLISHER / # OF PAGES Romance/210/ Harlequin / 184 pgs
SERIES/STAND-ALONE: #1 in Rylance Dynasty
CHARACTERS Miranda Thornton/ farmer's daughter; Corin Rylance / heir to the Rylance industrial empire
TIME/PLACE: Present / Brisbane, Queensland Australia
FIRST LINES For Miranda in her hyped-up state, everything seemed to be rushing at her; cars, buses, cabs, pedestrians.
COMMENTS: Miranda was raised on a farm. Her "parents" did not have her until later in life. Both parents died when she was a late teen, before her mother passed she revealed the secret she had kept re: Miranda's birth. She is really their granddaughter and her bio mother is Leila Rylance the wife of Dalton Rylance -- CEO of Rylance Metals. Miranda has always wanted to be a doctor and decides to contact the Rylance family to put her through medical school. She meets w/ Corin and after determining her story to be true she is accepted in their scholarship program, however, he takes a personal interest in her and serves as a mentor and guide while she is studying. Miranda has no desire to meet Leila she just wants to reach her goal of becoming a doctor. Nice romance and story.
