Ehhh. This book lacked so much. The whole interaction between Denise and Rhett seemed rushed and not very well thought out. How can one reconnect with a person after some time and an incident and not have a conversation. One sit down to hash out the past would have eliminated all the mistrust and and deception.

Love this series, with this particular book, some of it was kind of predictable. I forget how young these characters are they kind of got on my nerves a little bit. Nevertheless I finished the book and I'm moving on to the next one in the series.

Post Listen Review: This book sucks as much as any other romance book. But don't take my word for it, I put it to the sucky not sucky test. But be forewarned it is an utterly biased test.

Not sucky - The heroine is not actually dumb or ditzy.

Sucky - The male lead is named Rhett. I think there was some other mildly notable book that used that name first. (Gone with the Wind)

Not sucky - There aren't really any shopping trips to make note of.

Sucky - This whole thing could have been resolved with a single conversation.

Sucky - The hero is a wealthy business man who is also a nice guy and supposedly treats his love well. (more on that later) How many wealthy real estate moguls do you know of that are just nice guys at heart? Yeah, that's how many I know of too.

Sucky - The woman is so utterly suspicious of the guy all the time that it is insane. Yet if she had a single conversation addressing the issue he could have cleared everything up.

Sucky - The hero tries to "get revenge" on Denise by planning to seduce her and drop her cold. That doesn't seem like he is a nice guy to me.

Sucky - The hero has no compunction about asking Denise to be his "escort" for the summer but gets pissed when she says he should use a dating service. That seems like a double standard and again not very nice to me.

Sucky - Horrible, horrible metaphors and dialogue. Here are some examples "Making love to Rhett Fennel was akin to smoking crack." Because there is nothing more romantic than crystalized, smokeable cocaine. "I want to go to the rodeo." I'm not really going to go into that one. "Even though you are dressed for a night of seduction, I am going to take a detour" She might be dressed nice but that doesn't seem like a very well thought out compliment. "I'll never impregnate a woman without marrying her after." Um, just thinking to myself here, wouldn't before be the preferred occasion? But at least he is willing to take responsibility.

Not sucky - Denise owns some kind of daycare for children and she caters to those that can't afford other services.

Sucky - There are exactly zero scenes of Denise actually interacting with a child from said facility.

Sucky - They are "weekending on the cape" and the guy tells Denise she needs to "Take more time for herself." Mind you when he said this they were WEEKENDING ON THE CAPE. Which sounds pretty damn relaxing to me.

Sucky - She is supposed to be super hard working but all she ever does is go to fundraising parties and makes certain she gets a weekly mani-pedi.

Sucky - Rhett makes the rent for the daycare lower but I seriously get the impression that any other person would be charged double, daycare or not.

Sucky - They call each other baby every five seconds. "Come here, baby." "No, baby" "That dress looks great on you, baby." Could we possibly infantalize each other more? O wait, then they feed one another. So I guess they can.

Sucky - Everyone smiles wryly, the men are fantastically wealthy, the women are hard working and can easily recognize and often own Louis Vitton bags and the men are seriously fit with nary a pushup in sight. Women and men always seem to adhere to rigid gender stereotypes. That's like all romance books though.

So is it sucky or not sucky? Not sucky - 3 Sucky - 13

It's Suuuuuuuuuucky!!!!!

Pre-Listen Guess: They didn't have an audiobook edition on goodreads but I assure you I am not reading the text of this book. From the look of the book it looks like a crappy romance. And considering that there were at least three other crappy romance books with the same exact title by different authors, my guess is that this is going to suck.

3.5 Star. I enjoy this author’s books the way I enjoy a soap opera. They are romances with happily ever afters, but they feel realistic in the way people act towards one another and fight and mistrust each other and don’t always learn their lesson the first time.

This is a second chance at love romance featuring Rhett and Denise, college sweethearts whose love story imploded due to betrayal and mistrust in college. Now years later, Rhett is seeking revenge against Denise for her betrayal but how can he commit to it when he still has feelings for her.

I enjoyed this a lot. It was pretty dramatic and enjoyable and problematic but realistic. Rhett fights with Denise the way people fight in real life. He’s not always the most respectful and she’s not always the most trusting and it has a hint of toxicity, but you never doubt that they love each other. I also really enjoyed hanging out the other Eatons from previous books and meeting Denise’s brother, whom I’m beyond intrigued by. I have an older brother who I’m close to as well I loved their relationship. I’m a huge fan of the Eatons and I’m enjoying all the audiobook performances so far (especially at 1.5x speed). Can’t wait for Xavier’s book up next.

I really like a good romance and the summary promised a lot of tension, heartbreak and just plain conflict, which always makes me cry and I love those kinds of books. But(yes there's a huge but), I was hugely disappointed. Let me explain:

They were a great couple for 4 years, then Denise thought Rhett was cheating on her and he thinks that after breaking if off she proceeded to jump into bed with his best friend. Both weren't rational enough to try and talk it over back then, but that part is understandable.
They both go on to have careers and meet again when Rhett is trying to get revenge on Denise for having sex with said former best friend and arranges for them to meet to discuss the rent for Denise's daycare centre, he owns the building. He devices a plan in which she can either choose to pay an enormous amount of rent or become his hostess/date for the summer. I found the reasoning for this a bit hard to believe, but still, I thought, let's see what happens from this.

I expected lots of devious plotting and Denise finding out and being heartbroken all over again and him discovering he still loved her after all in the end, after which revalation they kiss and make up and proceed to have lots of babies. Or something like that.

But none of this happened, or at least not in this context. They never really talked the misunderstandings from their previous relationship over, they just discovered what happened because someone told them. There's this huge mystery about Rhett's father, which didn't really seem that important to me and was a bit of a blah moment when he finally found out.

What I also couldn't figure out is the immediate switch from Rhett's need to get revenge to him loving her like he did before in just one date. And then deciding to get married after the second or third. There really was no conflict in this! And I love conflict! I expect and want it. This is somewhere at the beginning of the book and I couldn't figure out where the story was going exactly. What the book seemed to tell me is that they loved eachother, didn't talk about their problems and had sex whenever possible. And I don't mind sex in romance books, but there has to be a relevant plot somewhere too!

I thought the author definitely had a nice plot for an enjoyable romance novel, but then she didn't stick to it. I was really disappointed and found myself going 'huh??' more than once while reading it. Also, I didn't understand how he went from being named Garrett to Rhett (I mean, where does that H come from all of a sudden, but maybe that's just me being nitpickerish).

My rating: 1 star, I really want to give it more, but I can't in all honesty.

I must admit to being disappointed in this particular 'Eaton' book. I liked the characters, but the story lined seemed a bit rushed in areas and dragged on in others. Once the reveal was made the book seemed to take off like a rocket and not all for one to catch up. I look for the next one to be a bit better. Denise's story was not the justice to the love you can see she has for her Rhett.

Merged review:

The narrator fell flat. enjoyed seeing past Eaton couples and new babies. Even years later this story is not working for me the way that it could have.

not the best book i've ever listened to. the plog was good but not executed well. the language used also got on my nerve. i would have liked to see the characters get deeper into why they split up previously and have more development of Garrett's revenge. Alers just sped through resolving the main characters relationship. not sure if i'll read another novel by this author. i have another book in my tbr list. i'll see how it goes.

Alers is too versed in romance novels to put this book out. After the Cole saga, it's hard to read something so simple and white washed. Even for a serial romance, I expected more. The ending, although I love having made Trey and Rhett brothers, was simple, rushed and out of context.

The book was ok. I did feel like the story was rushed and much more detail could have been given. Overall, I liked it and would read more by this author.
