I am an idiot. I bought this book without first checking to see that the version(s) of Manga Studio this book covers was the same version of Manga Studio I bought. It wasn't. This book deals with Manga Studio Debut and Manga Studio EX. I bought Manga Studio 5; a much more recent iteration. As I said, I am an idiot.
Still, once I'd realised my mistake, I carried on reading anyway. After all, I thought, the software can't have changed that much, surely? There must be plenty of crossover, right?
Wrong! Between EX and 5 the software has changed almost completely. There is some crossover but only about 20%, maybe. As I said, though, I should have checked. It's not the author's fault.
Having now finished the book I can honestly say that I did get something out of it, albeit not as much as I'd hoped. There is advice in here that applies to all artists, whether they're working digitally or more traditionally. The book is clearly written in an easy-to-understand conversational style and is even quite funny in places.
I did have to raise an eyebrow, though, as the author comes right out and says a few times that he doesn't understand the purpose of some features. Maybe, if you're writing a book about it, you might want to find out? Just a thought...
If you have the right bit of software, this book is probably worth four stars. If, like me, you don't, then it's probably only worth about two. I've averaged these scores out to give it a three star rating, largely because most people going out and buying a copy of this software will buy the most recent version (like I did) which limits the usefulness of this book going forward. If they released a revised version, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
A great guide for the program which starts with basic practices and builds towards the more complex details regarding the progran. My only complaint is this book is outdatrd by about 6 versions of Manga Studio, so a lot of the newer features aren't discussed which leaves quite a bit unlearned. Thankfully the program itself is forgiving so you can trial and error it, but I'd like to see an update to this as has been done with several other Dummies Books.
This isn't really a book you read from beginning to end, unless your just skimming at the beginning to get a sense of what the software is capable of. It's something you have beside you at the computer as you do the various exercises, trying the various tools, preferably with a graphics tablet.
I have six different drawing software packages on my computer and I have used all of them with some degree of proficiency...or lack thereof.
Since I am doing cartooning for the book I am working on, I was 'intrigued', to say the least, when I saw this book. I'm going to start learning Manga Studio 'by the book' and , if I achieve 'reasonable success', then it'll be solely because I am a dummy when it comes to learning software and I need a book written for me in mind.....
Now, if they only had a dummies book for the Sony PSP!!!!!
