My sister gifted me with a pile of New England travel guides before our recent jaunt up the coast. In the past, I've used resources online to plan our trips. In the weeks ahead of our trip, having hard copies allowed me to page through the books and imagine possibilities without the distractions inherent with a device. Fodor's is easy to navigate and filled with good suggestions. I particularly liked the section on Newport's Cliff Walk with descriptions and a brief history of each mansion. Walking the Cliff Walk path and visiting the Breakers, Marble House, and the scenic Salve Regina campus was a wonderful experience!

Good overview, but they left out places. The hotel pros and cons were hilarious to read.

I've been using this travel guide to plan a New England trip next October. There is an overwhelming amount of travel information on-line at various websites, but I was finding it very time consuming to sift through it, narrow it down and plan a route for our trip. Fodor's helped me considerably to highlight the places we really wanted to see in an 9-day trip, choose a route and list the sights along the way. The guide is chock-full of information on the small towns and villages, places to see, historic sites, scenic routes, expected weather, etc.

I tend to ignore the hotel and restaurant lists in guide books, as they are never current enough, and of course, they don't include any reviews; TripAdvisor, Hotels.com, and other on-line resources are much more useful in that regard. In my opinion those sections could be eliminated from guide books altogether, reducing the weight and page count considerably. The included map is okay for an overview, but not detailed enough for our purposes, so I ordered a AAA map to use instead.

Whether you're looking for a general overview of New England, or detail in most of the towns and cities along the way, you'll find this a very useful resource.

Good overview—-glaring omission was Worcester, MA—super restaurant culture, nation’s finest art museum, eleven colleges, three world-class concert venues—central New England’s most vibrant spot...
