Axel Feeney is the youngest firefighter in his crew, and also my boss’ brother. He’s a risk taker who carries no fear.
Or so I thought.
When one of his squad perish in the line of duty, what was once his mission to keep me safe turns into an obsession that breaks our hearts and whatever chance we had for a happily ever after.
Axel’s attempt to keep me at arm’s length is torturous, but before the dust settles and I get a chance to collect the pieces of my shattered heart, he skips town, leaving everything and everyone he knows behind.
Move on, he says.
Date someone else.
So why, when I do precisely that, does he stroll back into town months later, angry and dangerous, and demanding a seat at the table with my date and me?
Is Axel responsible for my new beau’s burned out truck and charred house? Or is the villain in my story also the hero?

What caught my attention on this book that author had advertised. That’s the only reason why I finished this book was because I was hoping the scene would pop up. It did but no the way the author wrote it in the advertisement.
For the first portion of the book, the feelings seem to only be one sided. Yeah in Axel’s head it would be different but he didn’t act that way. It really seemed like this was a one sided “relationship” and that Hannah kept chasing after a man who did not want her. Even to the point where she would come to his house uninvited, crawl through his bedroom window and cuddle him.
The way Hannah acted at the funeral was so freaking obnoxious, I wanted to punch her. “I will not be ignored” “Axel” calling out his name repeatedly, being obnoxious as he is talking to his fire crew. Then saying “I will not be ignored” when him and his crew are trying to talk and comfort each other.
In the first portion of the book Hannah was presented as a stage five clinger who didn’t take hints. It wasn’t until you are 3/4 into the book that it comes about that Axel led her on for a year.
Axel going on and on about how dangerous being a fireman and Hannah shouldn’t date him got repetitive and annoying. Also him going on and on about how she is just a teenager and he can’t date her. Dude you are 21 and she is 19 STFU.
The whole situation at friend situation that came to light at the very end seemed unnecessary. It seemed like it was added in the book for fluff.
I really liked Ruiz (I think that’s his name) and I will be reading his book when it comes out in a couple days.
I saw an ad for this on instagram and I had to see if Axel groveled after what he said to Hannah. So let’s break it down.
The beginning of the book I just didn’t understand Hannah. She was convinced Axel loved her but he consistently turned her down and pushed her away. I’m not sure why she kept coming on so strong. When they finally sleep together he tells her no multiple times and she’s like nope we’re doing this, I know you love me. If a guy did this everyone would have their pitchforks out.
Turns out yeah I guess he did love her and after something traumatic happens we get the breakup. We get it from his perspective so we know he doesn’t mean it but he calls her desperate, pathetic, a wh0re. And I just don’t know how you come back from that after ghosting everyone for 8 months. He has no plan. Just shows up and is like I lied, I love you.
The conflict with the antagonist wasn’t really focused on until 90% and then it wraps up in the very last chapter. It didn’t really make sense. If there was less back and forth, and more focus on the thriller plot I think I could have rated it higher.
The book had a good premise and I loved the look into what a firefighter goes through and the PTSD they all can suffer from. That being said I gave it three stars for these reasons:
1. The h was honestly an unlikable, unintelligent moron. I seriously couldn’t stand her. SPOILER ALERT….during the house fire Axel is tells her to go out the window so he can open the door and leave, and then tells her to hurry because the floor is collapsing. Does she go? Nope. She stays in a burning house arguing. Literally someone has to carry her through the window kicking and screaming while Axel is telling her to leave so he can escape the house too.
2. Everything was so repetitive. If I had to hear the H or h talk about the same thing again I was going to scream - why the H couldn’t be with her and how the h loves him.
3. Last… the suspense that was thrown in at the last second was so obvious to everyone but the h, and was rushed. The whole suspense part took about 5 pages.
A great premise but hard to like. I am intrigued y the next book but not enough to read more.
4.5 ⭐️ I love an Emilia Finn book. I love Axel. We met him in Nixon’s book, and then loved him in Preston and Nicole’s book. I adore Axel, I LOVE Hannah, and I loved this story arc. Made me cry and then laugh and hope.
Only reason it was a 4.5 is because the whole fires storyline came in so late and felt so rushed. Otherwise, this story hit me right in the feels.
The first 20% of this book was the FMC throwing herself at the MMC who had stupid reasons they couldn’t be together when they basically were. He had super immature thoughts about their relationship but acted like him being TWO years older than her was decades. I liked how the story changed at the end but that wrapped up too quickly and had her be annoying and dumb in a really bad moment.
This is turning out to be a fantastic series. I love seeing the Checkmate crew intermixed in the story. It adds a nice connection to these new characters and makes me feel like I'm back in the folds of my friends. That's what those characters were in that series, my friends, and now the tribe is getting bigger.
There was a lot of growth in these characters and there were a few moments where I worried if past hurts could be forgotten. It was a bump ride but so worth it.
Always love stepping back into roller town even if it’s only for a little while. Axel is the brother of the baker from the previous book and Hannah is her friend/co worker. I loved the banter between Axel & Hannah, at times I was annoyed with both characters and wanted to shake them and be like ummm come on now!!!! Their friendship was amazing and the development of more was easy to follow. “Some people simply don’t deserve to be in your life.” -was one of my favorite lines in this book! Both Axel & Hannah have some many things to overcome and work through as individuals.
I’ll start by noting this book is full of dubcon, so if that’s a trigger do not read. The female lead of this book is completely unlikeable IMO, for the first 30% of the book she refuses to take no for an answer. Then she’s incapable of making decisions in the last 30%. I couldn’t stand the character and don’t know why we should be wishing for her happiness. Big miss of a book in an otherwise great series.
I know with every book this author writes, that I’m going to feel a lot of emotions. And many of them I won’t like. But by the time it wraps up, I’ll be happy about it. This was no different.
(I’ll preface by saying some of these comments I wrote while mid-read, so if I’m extra salty it’s because that’s what I felt at that moment).
Hannah is 19 yo and sweet as sunshine. She’s also pining hopelessly over Axel, who admits he loves her too, but refuses to let them be a thing. He keeps her a secret, even their friendship is in secret, even though they have never been more than best friends. Best friends that spoon at night, but nothing more. Because he gets off on playing the martyr, he continues to hurt her over and over in the name of “protecting her”. He’s all of two years older than her, yet acts as though there’s a huge age gap and she’s only 14. I really wanted her to stop throwing herself at him when he was just playing with her heart, and when he completely stomped on it and lit the shards on fire, I really hated him. He was intentionally cruel to someone he pretends to care about, just because it filled his martyr complex a little bit more. Then he disappeared for seven months without even a peep to let her know he’s alive. It’s not often I wish for the h to find happiness with someone else, but this is such a time. She deserves better. I said what I said.
Do I love this author’s books? Yes. But do I also sometimes hate the characters? Also yes. She has a habit of making the guys say and do some really cruel and awful things to their women before finally getting their heads out of their rears. It’s hard to stomach sometimes, and I think I’m glad I have a break before the next release only because I think I’m emotionally done with it after binging the last few books. Hopefully with the reset, I’ll be able to handle the darkness I already know is coming in the next book since Ruiz is in a very dark place. And frankly the idea of watching him destroy his sweet h makes me want to rage.
::Sigh:: by the end, I was happy with their HEA. And I knew I would be, but I really wanted to fight it for the majority of the book. She didn’t immediately take him back, though one could argue she did let him in too easily. He definitely knew his mistakes, and clearly had regret. I’m not sad about them finally getting their HEA, but I am a little glad I get a break until the next book is released from toxic behavior from guys that can’t figure themselves out without destroying the woman they supposedly love first. It’s definitely a love-hate rollercoaster every time.
Crash & Burn is the third book in the Lost Boys series by Emilia Finn, featuring a riveting enemies to lovers romantic suspense story with Axel and Hannah. Axel and Hannah have long been a duo, two best friends who were secretly in love, but wouldn’t cross that line out of fear. As a firefighter, Axel didn’t want to condemn Hannah to a life of constant worry, despite what Hannah wants. When the possibility of more finally manifests, the ultimate tragedy hits Axel’s crew. Axel pushes Hannah away in a cruel and final way and disappears after demanding that she move on. When he comes back 7 months later ready to repair the damage he caused, Hannah is dating, and chaos seems to be abound all around her. Are she and Axel truly meant to be, or are all these strange occurrences foreshadowing for the danger that will separate them once and for all?
You guys! This book had me all in my feelings so much that I had tears streaming down my face on more than one occasion!🥹 Poor Hannah! Don’t get me wrong, I still love Axel, but he put that poor girl through the wringer!! I may have imagined myself smacking him on her behalf!😉 But seriously, as with all Emilia Finn books, the characters are as authentic as you can get— Raw emotions, witty banter, laugh out loud moments, and the spicy scenes are hot enough to need some of those sexy firefighters!!🥵🥵 The suspense subplot was top notch, bringing twists, action, and drama, You can enjoy this book as a standalone, but I always tell people that they will never regret taking the time to jump into the fictional Rollertown world!! But once you start, you’ll never want to leave!! It’s definitely one of my most favorite book worlds to visit!! I can’t wait to see what is in store for us in Jump!!
I received an advanced review copy for free, and am leaving this review voluntarily. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hannah Sullivan loves her job - the routine, the predictability, the surety of it, after a childhood of travel and abandonment issues - and being best friends with the hot firefighter brother of her boss… you can’t beat that! Axel Feeney is a firefighter who spends his downtime helping raise his niece and hanging out with his sister and Hannah at the bakery where they work. Although she wants more, Axel can’t stand the thought of her anxiously waiting by the phone to hear potentially bad news about his dangerous job, so he keeps their relationship mostly platonic and completely private. When tragedy strikes their small town, neither is prepared for their emotional fallout and the resulting crash and burn. But embers still glow, even if they are fueled by hate and sparks still fly, threatening to ignite them both.
Crash & Burn is ultimately a story of life and death and how you cope with the unknown. It begs the question: is putting what you feel is best for someone else in front of your own wants really a sacrifice or an exercise in martyrdom? With memorable characters and a intricately woven plot, Crash & Burn will take you on a journey of forgiveness, redemption, and discovery that will leave you both wanting to yell at Feeney and Sully for being complete idiots and wanting more of their beautifully broken love story.
This is a book that can be read as a standalone, but if you are a Rollertown fan and have read The Gilded Knights series, the story starts during the last part of Chasing Fire. Book three of the Lostboys Series is everything you love about Emilia Finn… the emotion, the fun, the humor, the heartache, the suspense. I love the cameos from Ms Finn’s other series that always leave me with a huge smile on my face. If you haven’t already fallen in love with this town, start here or go back to the very beginning with Finding Hope. You won’t be disappointed.
🔥 🥯 🎭 🌟 BOOK REVIEW 🌟 Crash & Burn by Emilia Finn 🎶 Wannabe - Austin Giorgio
Holy fire and smoke. Hannah and Axel were addictive and yet so grating at the same time. The level of angst from Axel was top notch, for more than just Hannah’s friendship with his sister, but his career as a firefighter too. Pushing the worlds largest divide between himself and Hannah, words hurt more than actions. Yet, the actions are just as intense too.
Running from his loved ones to “save them hurt” is the fools way out. He realizes this and more when he comes home and finds Hannah has moved on. Jealously is a funny thing, and has Axel doing some questionable things in life.
This book, while an addictive friends to lovers to enemies to lover, has some suspenseful twists here. I suspected the what, just not the who and DAMN. It definitely helps to keep the interest since it’s not as spicy as other from this author, so keep that in mind.
I did enjoy the bromances (the next book with Ruiz😅) and cameos with checkmate. Also, Hannah and her sass and snark was perfect! Hannah most definitely made Axel work for his forgiveness, sometimes to an annoying point, honestly. Regardless, she. Made. Him. Work!! One of my favorite parts of these types of books. The grovel. Highly recommend and can easily be read as a stand-alone within the series (but why wouldn’t you want to read them all??)
This is the third book in the Lost Boys series, but can be read as a standalone.
The longing these two characters felt for each other was so palpable. They each described teh other as the love of their life, but firefighter Axel keeps Hannah at arm's length. He doesn't want her to have to worry about him if job goes wrong.
Hannah works with Axel's sister at her bakery. She is happy with a normal life and doesn't understand why Axel keeps thinking she should go off and experience the world.
On the night that Axel gives in to his feelings for Hannah, tragedy strikes and he is so distraught that he pushes Hannah so far away. Can their friendship survive?
Axel returns to town months later for his sister's birthday party. He is still in love with Hannah and doesn't know how to fix what he broke....
This book has my heart. I alternated between wanting to hug both Axel and Hannah or shake them. I truly loved this book. Just amazing.
For me this was an OK story. The H is a firefighter. The h is a baker/caterer. They are young (21 and 19). They keep their attraction towards each other a secret only allowing themselves to flirt and be best friends. The h keeps pushing the H for more and tells him she loves him. He says "yeah". He keeps the h at arm's length to protect her from the heartbreaking possibility of his being injured or dying because of the dangers of his job.
One night he finally gives in to her persistent argument for intimacy when they are interrupted by an emergency response to a fire that ends with the fatality of a colleague. The reality of his worst nightmare, sends the H into a panic. He breaks it off with the h by saying cruel and hurtful things to her and he runs away for seven months with no contact with the h. He returns for his sister's birthday and is upset to see that the h is dating. He decides to get her back. I felt very disconnected from the main characters and did not feel their emotions so there was not a lot of angst or feels.
This is the third book in this series by this author, this is also the first book I've read by them and I was not disappointed. This book can be read as a stand-alone. This is the story of Axel and Hannah, these two have enemies to lovers' romance from the start. This story has lots of action, drama, suspense, and of course plenty of hot and steam scenes too. This is a fantastic read from this author and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
Release date - 07 July 2023 Print length - 343 pages
Even though this is book three in the series it can be read as a stand alone. But I hope your ready for one hot fire fighter and a sin full baker because that's what your going to get.
Axel has had his eye on her since the first day they met you could call it love at first site. But thinking he's to old works a dangerous job as a fire fighter he won't be good enough and well self sabtoge him self from the out side and try to push Hanna a way but love her on the inside is hard AND a brief time away does he really see her and himself as well.
Hanna has made no qwams about who she loves though its been a bit of a secret only because she works with his sister. But events roll on and things come to a head. Only to have things take on a bigger roll in her life
But don't worry they do find their way to each other and a few huge bumps in the way. I really recommend you check this one out and see how Hanna and axel find their way to each other
Emilia does it again! 👏🏼🔥 Heading back to roller town to meeting Axel and Hannah in their fight for love they deserve. After Axel finds anyway possible to stop Hannah from loving him to protect her from his job as a firefighter, nothing can stop the flames of desire between these two. This story is one of for the ages, bound by their souls they do everything to forget each other.. even 7 months apart cant stop their love, not even the psychotic Raul who’s mission was to derail Hannah’s life and keep her to himself! This blazing story is incredible! Emilia’s talents of crossing time and keeping the town alive is inspiring! Reading Emilia’s books are like a warm blanket, your favourite teddy.. they’re home. 🧡
Axel is first introduced in Chasing Fire, part of the Gilded Knights series, as a firefighter on Nixon Rosa’s crew and then again in Regret as Nicole’s younger brother. This book picks up during the events of Chasing Fire and then jumps a few months ahead. Hannah is first introduced in Regret as an employee at Nicole’s bakery.
I really enjoyed this book. It was not what I was expecting but then again Emilia always surprises me in the best ways. There is a little bit of everything in this book - banter, second chances, animosity, jealousy, revenge, mystery, suspense, loss, hope and love. One of my favorite parts is the unlikely friendship between Axel and Ruiz. Plus Hannah’s feisty personality!
This is the third book in this intriguing series, and this is Axel and Hannah’s journey. Axel is a firefighter who is the youngest member of his crew, and he and Hannah are best friends who are secretly in love with each other. When a tragedy strikes, Axel cruelly pushed Hannah away, and then he disappears. Now 7-months later Axel is back wanting to make amends, but is it too late? This is a well written story which is an action packed, emotional roller coaster, with danger, suspense, twists, drama, humor, witty banter, angst, second chances, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an entertaining, unpredictable, and steamy addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
Axel is a carefree fearless firefighter.. or so Hannah thought… after a series of unfortunate events Axel is placed on leave after breaking his leg in the line of duty.. while on leave one of his squadmates perish. what was once his mission to keep Hannah safe turns into an obsession that breaks their hearts and whatever chances they had for a happily ever after.
This was by far my favourite in this series! I felt everything Hannah and Axel were going through! My heart hurt for her. I was angry at Axel for her. I cried with her. But I also could understand why Axel did what he did. I never could have predicted that little twist at the end though and I was in tears through it! Fantastic read! Loved it!
4.5 stars. Story is great. Loved the chase and the grovel. We know what the twist is pretty early on. Not much spice. There is a ton of chemistry and spice - while there is a lot of fire - it’s all actual fire. There are two scenes that are kinda hot ….
I’m mostly let down with the quick ending. They get no time in the book to enjoy each other - she chases him…. He chases her …. Something happens - end!
I loved the side characters. I want Ruiz’s story (which I’m guessing is tied to Viv) but I’m super let down by an extremely notable scene that Ruiz is front and center for - and there is no acknowledgment of it. Without him ….. there would have been a whole other ending. I would have liked for them to have a conversation or something- give credit where credit is due.
This was my first time reading this author and I was impressed! I loved this book! It brought out all of the feels and added a touch of suspense and drama.
Axel and Hannah have been dancing around taking their situationship to the next level for a couple years. They are best friends and soul mates, but Axel believes that their life experiences differ too much for them to be together. He also believes his job is another issue. The push and pull between these two is fun to watch. Although, at times it is heartbreaking.
Overall, this is a story that is heavy on the plot. It has a mysterious element woven into it that picks up towards the end of the of the book, you might start noticing (I did). There is some spice also, but just a few scenes. The book is under 300 pages so it is a quick read and it flows nicely!
Thanks Emilia Finn and Chaotic Creatives for the ARC opportunity

small town love alpha hole friends to lovers second chance
This was a fun quick read. I haven't read the first two books of Lost Boys but now I plan to. Axel and Hannah whilst sometimes a bit jarring (come on, that age gap nonsense? she's 19 and he's 22?) were great together. Their friendship is amazing though.
Personally, I was a little taken aback by the reaction of Axel's sister when the cat was out of the box that Axel and Hannah had more than friendship. She was incredibly hostile and it confused me to no end.
The spice wasn't too much but what we got was great and I loved the twist in the end.
I'm back and forth with this one. It has all of the emotional angst of an Emilia Finn story, but it's just quick. The first half of the story isn't a meet and fall in love. They are already there. It's rather a he's fighting the love due to so called protectiveness. Which lets be honest is both sweet and annoying. The last bit is where I have my problems. It seems to wrap up way to quickly. If thatt is such a thing?? But it's still an Emilia Finn book. And lets be honest anything she writes (even if its not my one of my favorites of HERS) is still a page turner. So I could only knock it down by 1 star. Because its still a really good must
Hmm, I’m a big fan of being back in Roller town and reading the familiar names and places. Hannah is a little whinny for my taste, she begged and begged to get what she wanted and managed to change her life but still cried about it. I’m not agreeing with why Axel thought he could “disappear” from his family and friends lives. Then when he changed his mind and came home she decides to be stupid when the house is on fire. Seriously if they tell you to get out, get out so lives won’t be lost. Obviously since it’s fiction it all worked out but really be smart he could have gotten out sooner. I hope the next one is more reminiscent of past Roller town books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
It was a cute book. The first few chapters and sprinkled throughout the book was the redundancy….geesh we get it…. why she wants him and why he pushed her away. Literally the same words regurgitated in the first few chapters.
Anywho….still a nice, quick read. I will say at the end in a particular scene…. I was HATING Hannah!!! Omg!! Biish, this is the one time to trust him and follow directions! Lol! I was yelling at her through my Kindle!!! Lol!
If you’re looking for super smut, this isn’t it. Mild, very limited s€x scenes.
I’m not mad that I read it. I’m sure the spin-offs following other characters would be decent reads as well. Just not in a rush to get to them.
That's really all there is to say. Hannah, the FMC, is highly unlikeable. Teenage characters like her are why I tend to avoid books with such young main characters. With the way she doesn't listen to "no" from Axel in the beginning of the book, if the genders were swapped, cops and a restraining order would be on the horizon.
I liked Axel in the previous book. I still liked Axel in this book. He, along with supporting characters from previous books, is why I gave it two stars instead of one.
And like so many other reviewers, her stubbornness in the fire nearly had me rooting for a Shakespearean tragedy ending instead the HEA that I knew was coming.
Crash and Burn is book three in the Lost Boys series, and this one is Hannah and Axel's story. They have been best friends forever, and they both are in love, but won't cross the line due to certain reasons. Things happen and Axel is back and ready to apologize and fix the damage he caused, but Hannah has moved on and is already dating someone. Imagine Axel's shock. Will he be able to fix what he did and the two of them be together, or are they done for good? This book will hit all the emotions. I felt so bad for Hannah and all the bs that Axel put her through. This book has real authentic characters, is raw, and gripping. I loved it, the plot and the characters, even though Alex irritated me at times.
